***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I unintentionally started a new garden project.

It is something I read about last year and decided not to do, but while I was cleaning out the back yard realized I already had half of what I needed for it. But this is going to be very low priority so while I'm starting it now (piling the wood) it will probably take a couple of years to complete enough to plant. It is called hugelkulture.

I personally have not had any issues with the weather extremes. But then again when the extreme temperatures hit last summer I turned everyone out to freerange and find their own comfort area. We also have fans in the cochin pens though I don't think anyone utilized them last year. The cold they dont have a problem with at all. They are so lovely when they all decide to run around the yard.

And by no means are these hatchery stock birds. The cock and one of the hens did very well at crossroads

i dont think carl meant anything, hard to tell about birds quality by a pic.

i saw a pic of some very nice looking golden seabrights, went to look at them and they were beautiful! only problem was they had to weigh 3-4 pounds each! biggest seabrights i have ever seen, and i do get to see some big ones at the sales and swaps!

i have hatchery bantam silverlaced wyandottes, and did very well with them at several shows for a couple of years. then they finally got too big!

sorry cowboy, lost track. [happening more and more lately.]

i have indian fantails, german modena's, real modena's, showkings, figuritas,,,, i think that is it right now.

i had something like 40 german modenas, but i think they are up to about 55 or 60 now.

momma walked by and hit me cause i forgot her giant runts, and her giant homers.

picked up a young red golden pheasant for 20 bucks the other night, just starting to color up.

missed a java green peacock for 35 cause i got buissy, could have made some good money off of him in a couple of months!

It was unintentional b/c I didn't plan on doing it until I started cleaning up the back yard, then got to thinking of all the wood we keep meaning to haul off that is all rotted. We can't burn being in town and we never seem to get around to hauling it off. So I am stacking it and as I have time and opportunity I'll cover w/ dirt, may take me a year or so though.

Hello...I am new to BYC and looking for a little help. I currently live in Kansas and do not have chickens. It looks as if we will be moving to the OKC area within the year and we would like a home with an acre or more and I would like to have a few chickens and ducks. I grew up with farm animals and really miss them. My question is in regards to zoning. A lot of home with acreage are within the city limits of towns. What towns in the OKC area allow poultry? Thx for any input.

Newcastle is just southwest of Okc, good schools and very few limitations on poultry. and a bimonthly chicken auction.

They're beautiful! I've got a tiny Silver Laced Cochin but she's never been real healthy. She acts like she's got the chicken version of chronic fatigue syndrome. S.he keeps plugging along although I keep expecting to lose her one day.
My LF Cochin boys decided 3 was a crowd in their bachelor pen today, they're 7 months old now and so huge. The 2 splash's got into it, flung blood all over the place & tore each other up. I know which one always starts it so I put him in one of the 8x8 pens and I guess I'll put a few girls in with him, probably the 2 Marans girls. I don't want my 4 LF Cochin girls in with any males

They're my most special babies in the world and I can't stand the thought of them getting the feathers yanked out of their heads and bred all day long. Banish the thought! It blows that I won't be able to keep the 3 Cochin boys together but that's life with testosterone filled males.
