I was at the auction last night and gave up... I did sale two baby chicks from that classroom project from Monty.... $0.65 ..... LOL Thats it......I gave my roo away to a byc poop peep and that made us happy as a clam...

Is beautiful here this morning, but sounds like a soggy mess
this afternoon and evening.

Couldn't go to the lake and tired of looking at the house, so at the
last minute we opted to load up the kids and head up to
Claremore for dinner and the Will Rodgers Memorial Rodeo.
For a local type rodeo, was probably the best one I've ever
been to. In the middle of it they ran 60 long horns out in
the arena and turned all the lights off and used spotlights
and made quite a tribute to Clem McSpadden - "the old days
and real cowboys". Mrs. McSpadden was there and they
presented her with a declaration. It was really neat.

We didn't get home until after midnight, so this bunch is really
draggin' this morning.

Everyone have a super (and safe) holiday weekend.

I second that on the photo...It gave me the chills.... Reminds me of all the older folk in nursing homes today. Its not easy for them. They are not always treated very well. Maybe I will try and take a polish in for a trip. Does anybody make chicken diapers on here ?

Beth - most places wouldn't care. Several years ago when my
mother was in a care facility, I would load up, beagle puppies,
baby goats, baby chicks, baby rabbits, - whatever was going
on at the time, and take them in up there. Those old folks
would pet, cuddle, and talk to those little critters and have a
blast.

One time in particular, one little nanny kid got away from us
and it took forever to find her. Way down at the end of one
hall, a senior gentleman who was bedfast, had obviously
coaxed that little thing into jumping up on his bed and he
had her all curled up beside him - hidden under the sheet !!!!
We hated to have to take her away.

But, mind you, this was a small town nursing facility and lots
of country type patients as well as staff. So..............

Looks like a beautiful day to unload the cages from the van, put all the Americaunas back into one group so I can start hatching EE eggs

I got a long cage last night that I am going to use as a chicken tractor. On the theory that only chickens can truely rid an area of bermuda grass, I am going to set a couple of them inside the cage and put it in the new garden, so they can work on the bermuda without disturbing intentionally planted vegetation. I may try several cages of them on the raised garden that has become infiltrated with choke weed. I have just been pulling it out by the armfuls and feeding it to the chickens

Al - I got a couple of tomato plants and some pepper plants set out yesterday morning, but I am a LONG way from getting my garden planted. It looks like the rain will hold off today so I am going to head that direction once the critters are squared away.

I'm thinking most may have been drinking? Gerald flashed his lights at a car that was heading toward us with it's brights on .... it turned around, followed us (sort of scared me there) and then about a mile later the driver finally turned the brights off and then turned off the highway about another mile down. I'm thinking maybe this fella forgot his way home & forgot he had the brights on? Anyway a couple of miles later they turned.

We bought the huge 4 hole hutch for only $45 !!!!! I guess buyers were distracted when it sold, because later the auctioneer asked who bought it and if we wanted to resell it? Heck no! Reminds me of the Cement auction when Al was distracted and I bought a rabbit hutch

that somehow Al convinced us to resell to him. This 4 holer is so big that Jerry and his son and Gerald and ... well, I was of little help loaded onto Gerald's big ol truck ... it only hung off the tailgate a little ways. Then the other hutch we bought for $25 was positioned on top, along with some of our cages, 2 small cages we bought at the auction and a wooden brooder we bought. There's no way we could have put anything else in or on our truck. We had to put our birds in the rabbit hutch & strap the cages on top of everything to make it home. We sadly didn't sell our black jersey giant hens. By the time they made it thru the auction, it was around midnight. So, we took them home. Everybody wanted Maribeth's ameraucana hens though! Congratulations Maribeth! Even your husband, Dean, couldn't believe the price!

We came home with a baby chicks that we shouldn't have bought. I didn't have room for all of ours and I bought more

This wasn't supposed to happen

So, we bought some bantam cochin chicks ... mottled, blue, black & splash, barred, and buff, and then some bantam silver duck wing, and some marans chicks, and a trio of "Show Quality" black rosecomb bantam chicks. Eggs we bought are gold lace, mottled and black cochin bantam and some mf and bb red bantam eggs. I keep saying we're downsizing. OK, so buying smaller birds is one way of downsizing, isn't it?

Well, I have to get off this computer and get a zillion things done today.

I know someone who regularly takes baby chicks and ducks to the nursing home in Yukon, for the residents to enjoy.

I bought a single duckling last night and oldmotherhen and I took turns holding it. It will be among the critters I take when I speak at a "senior citizens" luncheon in June - hopefully, I will have it spoiled rotten by then. I spoke to a different group last year and after being there for lunch and talking for about 15 minutes, I pulled a turkey poult from the shoulder bag I was wearing - a fun surprise since it had been quiet the entire luncheon, happy to be petted on occasion.​
