Gosh, we sure got to number 100 really fast! It seems like just yesterday that I was number 50.

Okieboy, I love your goats! Yeah, I don't think I'd want any having the run of the yard, although that sure is a cute picture of the one on the cruiser. I think it would be great too when/if a traveling salesman decided to visit.

P.S. You have a pretty puppy dog too!

Thanks for letting me know. I'd better not rush to buy anything yet, until I know more about them. DutchChic has Nubian milk goats that I'm considering too ... I just don't know. I want one that stays cute & friendly and doesn't climb on vehicles or eat flowers!

I know ... that's why I'd have to pen them up, because I love plants & gardens too! I've got to convince Gerald we need a few goats ... and a pen! I don't know though ... right now I'm listening to the nightly news and all I hear is the doom & gloom, food prices rising, etc. .... maybe I should cut back on critters.

Wow. 100 Okies! We have more members than any other state! And we have the most posts in the Where am I? Where are you! section.

I also have nubian goats and ADORE them. They really don't climb on anything except the bushhog after my DH is done mowing to eat the goodies.
BUT however after they ate all the grass out of their pen and them looking at me with their pitiful eyes I let them out to free range......... they ate the wires off of the boat, the horse trailer, the flat bed trailer, the AC unit, the seat off the 4 wheeler and the hoses off my gase grill.
I have tried to reason with my DH and tell him"They don't get on the cars!!"
Overall they stay out of trouble but I DO NOT have flowers, shrubs, or ornamental trees. I have goats instead.
Oh, the choices we make for our critters.

SC

Hey SC! I grew up in Columbus and still have a lot of family there. My bro is Red Goul that owns Sooner Printing there in Miami/commerce (not sure which town its techically in now..but down by the indian casinos).

Carla i firmly believe that we are going to see food prices increase in the next year in the same way that we've seen gas prices increase. I would not be surprised to see a gallon of milk at $6 a gal ...or more..by next year.

Our goal is to be as self-sufficent as possible. The goats eat weeds and browse and produce milk (no i dont have any flowers lol). The chickens eat grass and bugs and produce eggs and meat. The sheep eat grass and browse and produce lamb meat. The cow eats grass and will soon be beef in the freezer.

The horses, unfortunately, eat a lot of grass and dont provide anything ..most of them are for sale lol!

If you dont have a lot of grass for them to eat..they might well be more expense than they are worth. But if you have the acreage and fence it so they can eat grass and weeds and turn them into food for your family they provide considerably more resources than they use up.

I dont think i need all 9 of them for transportation..but with the price of gas.. i sure might end up putting some of them to work!

I could no more eat my horses than i could eat my dogs though. Chickens, lambs, pigs, cows..but not horses or dogs.

Wow, nine horses? I've only ever had the pleasure of having two at one time, but even that was too much for me (highschool, teenager, hormones, etc...

).

I saw an article the other day about farmers using mules to pull their implements. Might be a little hard on the horses, depending on the breed.

They're foxtrotters. They're built to be working horses. Theyd have no problem pulling a wagon or a plow.

We used to breed them but 2 years ago i ended up selling my foals for $1000 each cause of the drought so i gelded my studs. I refuse to breed when prices are so low. Since then horse prices have *really* dropped. Though gaited horse breeds have held their value much better than trotting horse breeds. When we quit breeding i sold all but the best from our breeding program. Still.. 2 ppl dont need 9 horses lol.
