If anyone is interesting in adopting a dog or cat, the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is celebrating 'Dog-A-Palooza' during the month of July and the adoption fee for dogs and cats is only $25. This includes spay or neuter, shots and health check. For more information, call 297-3100

Here's their website: http://www.okc.gov/animalwelfare/adoption.html

of my pound kitties & 1 pound puppy came from there and I wholeheartedly recommend the shelter for most any dog, puppy, cat, or kitten you could ever want. I just couldn't find a young great pyrenees there!

Hey everyone...I just wanted to stop by and say hi. I lost my four chickens Friday. They were the first chickens I had ever owned, and they were only about 9 weeks old. The neighbors dogs got into the chicken tractor and killed them. We were very attached to these. We were raising these as pets as well as layers. I have some mixed bantams and two barred rocks that I bought a couple of weeks ago. They are still in the brooder.

I can't figure out how to get the link to work!

I am doing this post for a friend. He has some mixed chicks he is selling . From day olds to a few days old.
They are all out of his layer flock which consists of Rhode Island reds some sex links etc. They will all be from breeds tha lay brown eggs. He is expecting to have a lot over the next two weeks so he wants to try to move them out as fast as he can. Since he has a lot coming on he is cutting his price to a dollar each if you take at least 12.
Let me know if anyone is interested.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss of your first chickens. So many are killed by dogs and other predators. That's why we bought a great pyrenees puppy since the breed is one of the best as a protector of poultry. Also, most of my pens are wrapped with old corrogated barn metal, burried about 4-6 inches in the ground and then up the sides of the runs about a foot or two.

Speaking of pyrenees, I saw an ad at the Shawnee Star newspaper website that advertised Abandoned Pyrenees pups, Free to good home. Here's the link to the website if anyone is interested http://classifieds.news-star.com/Merchandise/Dogs I have a habit of checking out all classified ad's I can read in my spare time ... I've done it since I was just a kid. It has always fascinated me what people have for sale ... that's why I love garage sales & auctions too!

okiemommy, I know that they are bred to be excellent livestock guardian dogs, but as for training and if they're different to train than any other dog, I'm not sure. You might do some searches on the internet about great pyrenees on how to train them right. As for my puppy, she's just learning basic commands, and we'll work with her later about sit & stay, etc. We're also crate training her in the house at night, although when she's grown will propably stay outside.

You sure need a fence. I know it's expensive, but field fence and t-posts aren't as expensive as some. You might put an ad on craigslist in the wanted section for some fencing materials. Once in a while, I see people giving used fencing away, but that's rare. Good luck!

Take and line the sides and top of the tractor with a cattle panel or two, they are about 25 dollars apiece now but a dog would only be able to get his head through it. Line it again with smaller wire and it should be fairly secure.

okiemommy, I definitely recommend a Pyrnese to care for your birds. My grandmother's Pyrenese guarded 25 turkeys and a dozen guineas, and she didn't lose a one to predators.

My grandmother kept the puppy on a long reinforced leash until she was older. Now she's roams free but stays close to the house. Someone tried to break into my grandmother's truck one night, the dog sent them running! Another time she was in the barn with a couple family members and fell. While they were calling an ambulance, the dog got into her truck (they'd left the door open), found a dirty tissue, and brought it to her. She's our Wonder Dog.

Carla, after I looked at the picture of Iris again, I realized she is definitely NOT a he!

Iris is such a pretty name; I'd never connect it to the IRS... I have an uncle that used to work for the IRS; now he's preacher! *haha*

Is the OKie list up to 100 Yet? Do I get to be 99 or 100?

I have been lurking for sometime now and I finally registered. I live in the very Northeast corner of Oklahoma and have quite the collection of critters. 6 Cows, 3 horses, a mule,3 goats, 5 call ducks, 2 runner ducks, 4 muscovy ducks, 2 standard cochins, bantam cochins and many farm chickens. I love to watch my chickens after a rough day at work, I call it "chicken therapy" they are so funny.

Well enough about me!

Your user id "cracked" reminds me of a lady I met at a VFW dance in Guthrie years ago. She was in her 80's, was a "Rosie the Rivetter" type that had worked during WW II riveting metal on warships. She could cuss like a sailor too! Anyway, she was such a character, and was one of the greeters/ticket takers at the VFW dance. I remember one of her lines when an older gentleman asked her to dance. It was "Well, you can shake it but don't break it 'cause it's already cracked". She was a hoot!

Gosh, I wonder what the percentage of members on line here are goat owners? It sure seems that over half of the Okies have at least a couple. Maybe there should be a backyardgoats website ???

Maybe I need to get a goat or two? I really need to sit down and research it. I suppose I'd have to have a pen to keep some in ... and probably an electric fence to keep them away from things I don't want them eating? Heck, by the time I decide to get goats, they'll come up with a goat influenza scare!
