Grace'sDad :

I never want to see another sceen likt that again. Grace is holding up pretty well I think. I am the problem. All I could do was cry. That is the hardest think I have ever done with pets. All I could think of was what could I have done to prevent this from happening. You can bet the trap will be set tonight but that won't help the Hamburgs. I am going to be rebuilding some of our pens and making sure that they are as secure as possible. I know I can't stop everything but I can sure do better than I have in the past.

Gosh, I can't imagine... I've had losses, but not like that. I am so very sorry.

Well I ended up losing 3 of the baby quail. I still don't think that was too bad.

It was quite stressful for them. Also my son's Americauna pullet that he bought in the auction is crowing. I'm thinking rooster!

It did it for the first time this morning. It sounds so sick so I think it may have been his first attempt. It reminded of a dying cow.

Later I'm going to get some pics and introduce my $21 chick. I ordered 6 eggs and have one baby Serama. I finally pulled the last 3 eggs from the bator this morning.

Het Teach, I have more duckies hatching. You know you want them!

okiechick57, thanks, isn't loosing birds hard!

Whirlwind, thank you.

Carah, thanks. Yes, I know raccoons sometimes stay on the creek behind our yard, so I am pretty sure they are the culprit.

Monty, thank you, and prayers are certainly appreciated!

Tina, thanks. We have one live trap which we will deffinately be setting, and we're calling the animal control department too.

Cammie, thank you!

KT, you are such an encourager! Thank you! I know I just have to get through this, then in the spring I can buy up a barn full of chicks.

Betsy, thanks. That sounds exactly like what we found this morning!... except a raccoon wasn't still in the pen. Making pens more secure is definitely our next step!

Grace - We're just sick over your ordeal. We'll be keeping our
eyes and ears open up this way for SQ prospects. It does
seem that coons do have good taste. They always pick the
very best birds.

Didn't seem to matter up here what we did to try to secure
the pens.......until we surrounded them with HOT WIRES ! We
haven't had a problem since. But, that's not to say we won't.
Don't even think about giving up. Seems you have the entire
state of Oklahoma hustling to get you back in business.

Hang in there !

Beth, thank you! I was thinking maybe I need a JRT, huh!

Tara, thanks, I have been trying to figure out a way to shrink and remove the crest on my spitz x hamburg... ha

Eulaine and Bill, thank you so much! I will send you my phone number and if you notice any nice SS Hamburg bantams at some shows could you please call me! I know I could pick them up from you at Idabel, if something came up very soon.
I may try electric fencing, I had not thought about that! Do you use a whole fence or just wires (that are electric)?
What I think we are going to do, is get this area secure... and get rid of any birds that are not "special" to me, then I will have more time and space to focus on keeping the birds I have safe!

Aw, thanks. I feel horrible for you. You could overcompensate like I have. I have 12 dozen eggs in the incubator now.

Plus I got chicks from POOPS in addition to 2 gorgeous blue cochin girls. If anyone up my way has SQ hamburgs let me know and we'll get them to you.

Grace, you're such an inspiration to us all for the way you handle youself altogether, and especially with what you've just endured with your flock. I'm sure you'll come back stronger than ever!
