I have a topic I would like some help with.
I would like to know if your chickens continue to lay throught the winter and if so how do you accomplish such a feat?
I used lighting last winter in the coop and it didn't help. I feed the same and they are getting 16 to 18 percent protein. In the past I have given them a little corn as treats and to help put on some body fat for the cold but never a lot.
So please share the plan you use to keep the girls laying?

Monty,
What you have to do is get a really great breed of birds. In this instance we'll call them ... oh ... White Rocks. Then just make sure they are dry and draft free and they should continue production right thru the winter.

I have never put heat or light in a coop and I haven't seen any real drop in egg production.

The main storm is supposed to move through tomorrow.. We only have a slight chance of storms in cemtral Ok but the eastern part could get it worse.
There might be a few showers tonight ahead of the main cold front.

Thanks Stimpy,! I think you and Al have cornered the WHite Rock market in Oklahoma.

Monty....We fed our chickens some corn each day and left the light on at night last winter and they never stopped laying....and laid pretty well at that. We were told that the corn would produce heat in their bodies and stave off the cold. Right now I just wish they would hurry up and stop molting and give some eggs in return for that feed bill. LOL

Monty,

My point was that I have never had heat nor light in any of my coops and I have never seen a significant drop in egg production. I do give them a large helping of corn in the late afternoon to help keep them warm on really cold nights, but that is the only thing i do any differently than in summer.

The fact that they are white rocks just makes them that much better.
