your photos are fantastic, i never thought photography was art until i took a photography class- changed my whole perspective...

i have a tree in our run, but my chickens enjoy pecking the bark rather than roosting in it, took us months to get the run and coop done, and solid enough not much can get in there- do you want standards or banties? i love the brahmas - have varying kinds, a small hobby flock, but it keeps growing in size thanks to this bunch of enablers!

pet carriers are wonderful transport vehicles for chickens. I recommend some newspaper or hay in the bottom because they do tend to get nasty if the birds are in them for several hours. Just makes clean up a little easier. Whether you start with babies or full grown birds depends on your goals. If you want eggs immediately, start with full grown hens. If you want the entertainment of watching the chicks grow up and the opportunity to try and "tame" them, start with chicks.

Whichever size you decide on to begin and probably whatever breed you decide to begin with, the enablers on this thread would be happy to help you find what you want.

Americaunas or Easter Eggers ("EE") are the only kind that lay blue/green/pink eggs. They come in all kinds of colors and generally have muffs and beards.

You can tell whether a chicken will lay white or tinted eggs by the color of their earlobes. White earlobes will get you white eggs. Red or blue earlobes will get you tinted eggs of some variation.

Easter Eggers sound just lovely... during my research i saw that breed/type and thought they looked like fun... i do love color:) Now.... i am guessing there is a lot of types of easter eggers.... or am i wrong... i sure could be wrong... since i do not know a lot in the egg realm.... if there is....is there a breed better for our weather than others?

i would go with chicks, what i do is turn the spare bathroom into a brooder, and spend time sitting on the floor with them so they can get used to me, they will walk all over you and eventually snuggle down. course once they get older, they get more independent, but they will always trust you- alot depends on the breed, my friendliest right now is my rhode island red pullet, and at first as a chick she was real standoffish, so you just never know. If you go to the mypetchicken.com site, you can search cor the traits you are wanting, that helps narrow it some

Naked Necks of course!

They are the first out of the coop no matter what the weather is and lay big brown eggs. Very people friendly, photogenic too, and make good broodies and moms.

Ya'll were waitin' on that wern't you?

artsyrobin:) thank you:) maybe instead of the bathroom i could just use the coop? it is a large coop... and i drilled a hole in top for additional heating lamps if needed...gosh i am learning a lot... all my friends are not that in to farm life.. so it is good to actually talk to people:)
