Okies in the BYC The Original

Thanks NNBreeder, I hadn't considered that.

I am seriously considering going to $2.50 or maybe 3$ per dozen for table eggs. Figuring $.75 per dozen for feed (and no telling how much feed waiting for them to start laying), plus $.34 each for egg cartons, I don't think 3$ a dozen is out of line.

Our time should be worth something. Right? Going out to take care of our flocks in weather like this should be worth something. Shouldn't we at least get our expenses back?

If they don't sell, I'll throw a rooster in the mix and hatch the eggs. Then they can give me a few dollars each for the chicks.

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLY'S ABOUT EGG PRICE'S

I FELT $1.00 A DOZEN WAS KINDA CHEAP WITH ALL THE FEED I BUY AND THE TIME I TAKE WITH THE CHICKENS. ALOT OF PEOPLE SAID THAT'S WHAT THEY "USED" TO BUY THEM FOR. SO I WILL UP MY PRICES AND IF THEY DON'T WANT TO BY THEM I WILL BE EATING ALOT OF EGGS OR COOK THEM FOR MY DOG'S. I ALSO PLAN TO GET A BATOR SOON. SO I CAN HATCH SOME TOO!!
THANKS

They closed the base last night & today, so Gerald and I have a mini-vacation!!!!! It sure is pretty outside with all the ice & sleet covering everything! I'm glad most places are closed because of the weather.

We have a creek going through our property and a steep hill on either side, so the road is awfully trecherous in icy weather. We went outside yesterday at 3:30 pm and a schoolbus had slid sideways and a back tire was almost off the road at our creek. The road was solid ice and there is no rails on the bridge, just at least a 15 ft drop to the creek below. Anyway, luckily with all the neighbors, all the kids got off the bus safely and walked up the hill to waiting parents and another school bus. Eventually the county maintenance guys showed up with a dump truck with sand/crushed rock and they spread it on the road & towed the bus up the hill. That was 2 hours of excitement! Oh and we met a neighbor named Brandon that lives at the top of the hill and he and his wife have some young hatchery pullets they're trying to raise in their back yard. I told him he should check out this forum! I hope they join!

Gosh we have a full tray of eggs hatching today, with brooders in the bedroom, trailer and shop full. I don't know where to put these new guys

I just hope the brooders in the trailer & shop are staying warm enough for the chicks that are in them. Oh, I guess we do have a small metal brooder in the shop, if we can find the sides to it & hope the thermostat still works on it.

I hear that the weather will be nice by the weekend .... that means we will definitely be selling some chicks at the Cement auction ... we'll have silkie, turken, egyptian fayoumi, and maybe some cuckoo marans & other chicks to sell ... unless they don't bring enough money, then we'll take them home & put an ad on craigslist for them. Oh, and if Al is still wanting some Silkie pullets ... I'll try to find some to bring.

Egg prices: We charge $2 a dozen for white & green and $3 for brown eggs. Most people that Gerald sells eggs to want the brown eggs, especially the dark brown eggs. I guess we'll keep back more marans & wellsummers chicks for the dark eggs.

I though the Cement auction is on Sat, Feb 7th, am I wrong or did they change it, Yes check and see what silkie pullets you have and we will make a plan. I do plan going nothing else to do.

Oh darn, yes you're right. I looked at the calendar and saw a Feb 1 as a S (not thinking it was Sunday) Gosh, one more week til I have an auction to go to! I don't know if I can wait that long! Oh well, I'm going to put some more birds on craigslist this weekend. We have got to sell some more roosters and juvenile birds to free up some cage space.

Carla :

You must really have the DT's for the auction LOL. I too am having a little cabin fever also. Went out to coop's a few minutes ago, what an adventure, Took 5 min just to get the doors open, water is still doing good not frozen, and all is well. that sleet is hard on my face, I do think the eggs are frozen though.

I just got home from work, a 20 minute drive was well over an a hour. The durn heater was working well and i could barely see. Wife called and said the power was out but luckily its back on intime forme to get home and chat on here. I hope we dont lose it again. I dont think im going to work tommarow, its not worth it. Hope you all are staying warm. Oh and we have branches and lots of trees down out here in TAHLEQUAH.

Boy oh boy at this weather!! I'm in the process of posting pics on myspace. My chicken coop doors were froze shut but the water inside was good thank goodness. They are all huddled in there. Problem is that I don't think my trampoline is going to hold up if there is too much more ice. The reason I was using it for a run is because the string is dry rotted and was unsafe for the kids to jump on. Wouldn't that be my luck to have ice cave it in!! Hope all the OKies are staying warm no chickens freeze!!

My Sister's family drove back from OKC today (thank you, God that they made it safely!). The 2 1/2 hour drive took 4 hours! She said there were times that they saw 15 wrecks an hour, including one man laying in a ditch! This definitely reminds me of our last big ice storm.
