They closed the base last night & today, so Gerald and I have a mini-vacation!!!!! It sure is pretty outside with all the ice & sleet covering everything! I'm glad most places are closed because of the weather.
We have a creek going through our property and a steep hill on either side, so the road is awfully trecherous in icy weather. We went outside yesterday at 3:30 pm and a schoolbus had slid sideways and a back tire was almost off the road at our creek. The road was solid ice and there is no rails on the bridge, just at least a 15 ft drop to the creek below. Anyway, luckily with all the neighbors, all the kids got off the bus safely and walked up the hill to waiting parents and another school bus. Eventually the county maintenance guys showed up with a dump truck with sand/crushed rock and they spread it on the road & towed the bus up the hill. That was 2 hours of excitement! Oh and we met a neighbor named Brandon that lives at the top of the hill and he and his wife have some young hatchery pullets they're trying to raise in their back yard. I told him he should check out this forum! I hope they join!
Gosh we have a full tray of eggs hatching today, with brooders in the bedroom, trailer and shop full. I don't know where to put these new guys
I just hope the brooders in the trailer & shop are staying warm enough for the chicks that are in them. Oh, I guess we do have a small metal brooder in the shop, if we can find the sides to it & hope the thermostat still works on it.
I hear that the weather will be nice by the weekend .... that means we will definitely be selling some chicks at the Cement auction ... we'll have silkie, turken, egyptian fayoumi, and maybe some cuckoo marans & other chicks to sell ... unless they don't bring enough money, then we'll take them home & put an ad on craigslist for them. Oh, and if Al is still wanting some Silkie pullets ... I'll try to find some to bring.
Egg prices: We charge $2 a dozen for white & green and $3 for brown eggs. Most people that Gerald sells eggs to want the brown eggs, especially the dark brown eggs. I guess we'll keep back more marans & wellsummers chicks for the dark eggs.
