We had a nice quiet Christmas here at home. Didn't have a lot of choice - couldn't get and of the cars out of the driveway. I hope things clear up quick, or I may not make it to work on Monday.
Two of the grandkids are stranded in OKC with their daddy. He deeply regrets not agreeing to meet us yesterday morning when we wanted to, so we could pick up the grandkids. He and his pregnant wife and the grandkids spent a coupe of hours stranded in the snow trying to get to her grandmother's house. They finally made it there, and he called and apologized. He hadn't been watching the weather on TV - he never does, so the severity of this storm really caught him off guard. We're going to try to pick up the grandkids on Sunday.
DH's parents called everyone yesterday and told them to forget about Christmas dinner - it's been rescheduled for New Year's Day. Hope the weather cooperates.
Got most of the PJ's finished - have one pair of pants and one shirt left to do. Unfortunately, the first ones I finished were for the two that wound up stranded in OKC. The other three were expected to go to their other grandmother's for Christmas, so I figured I could work on theirs after Christmas - they weren't going to come home until Sunday. Now we've told them they can open their presents from us when Eric and Shelby get home so they can all open them together. They have enough Christmas presents as it is to keep them happy.
A church gave the youngest daughter a turkey and a ham, so we had a good old fashioned Christmas dinner anyway. The only thing we didn't have was sweet potatoes. That's okay - it's better for my waist any way!
I thought my hens were goners last night. The east side of the henhouse is completely open (covered by welded wire) and there is a small window on the west wall and a small, floor level window on the southeast corner. I went out to give them some warm water and check for eggs - and the henhouse was full of snow. Most of the hens were huddled together under the roost. It looks like they had deliberatly raked most of the hay that covered the floor so that it was all under the roost. They looked wet and miserable. DH and DD went out and covered the west window with plywood. I don't have anywhere else to move the hens to, and I was sure that at least some of them would freeze to death. They were fine this morning. They were all lined up at the east side where the sun could get to them. We're going to have to put more hay out there for them, I am thinking, just to keep them up out of the mud. We even got three eggs today - we usually only get one or two. One of the eggs was a little pullet egg, so it looks like things may be ready to start picking up out there.
Guess I'd better get back to work on the PJ's. They may need them the next few nights!
Good Holiday Evening Everyone!
Well Uli made it home at about 2 this afternoon. Feed him breakfast pie w/gravy since he had not eaten since yesterday morning then we took a nap since neither of us slept well. Just got up to close the coops and make sure everyone was safe. All the birds are doing fine and have not lost any of them to the cold and weather (knock on wood, of course). Cancelled holiday dinner etc. until next week because the roads out here, especially HWY 9, are not safe and my daughter is not the best driver, bless her heart.
On a wonderful note I have made out like a bandit this holiday so far. My man gave me a nice kitchen island, a food dehydrater and a food processor. I think he is trying to say something but I am not sure what.
Oh and I got the cutest hat and scarf set which you will all be seeing me in at the auctions. He made out like a bad dog as well although one of his presents has not made it here due to stupid seller on ebay
He got a silk robe (heavy kimono silk), a first edition "Audubon Book of True Nature Stories", let me tell you that is a find, a blankie that I embroderied his name on and bunch of chocolate and stuff in his stocking, which he loves. I am hoping his other present gets here tomorrow or Monday.
Honestly it was nice just to spend time with my man on the holiday.
Well I am going to go eat some chocolate then go back to bed. Hope everyone had a great day. Oh and thanks to all of you for being such wonderful, kind, loving people you are, I feel truly blessed to have found this site.
Al good to see you how was your Christmas? Mine was pretty good I finally got my GPS that I have been wanting that way I can quit killing so many trees when we go on trips etc. So what has everyone got planned for tomorrow?? We have one more Christmas gathering to go to and it will be over for this year, Christmas time seems to wear me out anymore!
Thanks for asking Q, it was just fine fine indeed. just relaxed with the girls and had some family fun, did a little chowing down, and then Santa showed up and gave us all a little something. So yeah really nice, no plans for me this weekend just more of the same ole, but thats Ok. Glad to hear yours was fine and I'll bet the kids and Carolyn had a great time.
I think I hear a sliver of Coconut cream pie calling my name LOL, this is one skinney dude that plans to put on some lbs this holiday season.
Jason and I are curious to know due to the fact the Toms were sparring is this normal for them to beat each other up bad enough to lay on some internal injuries? the only aspect of the TOM that just died was all his back feather were gone to bare skin and he had some peck marks on him....
Cooked a turkey dinner since we were stuck here and nothing else was thawed...
Because I don't celebrate Christmas unless my daughter is here (and this year she's with her dad) I didn't get anything for Christmas. J doesn't much care for the whole holiday thing. He can be a real grinch. We'll see if he remembers my birthday on Monday.
Figured out this morning that my boots are over at his house, last used them when we were cutting down trees in his back yard. Now I'm having to put on a pair of his combat boots to trek out to the coop... feels like walking in clown boots! I don't have any fancy overalls or galoshes or anything because they're just not in the budget, so I make do with what I have
I need to go clean the bedroom so I can dig my sewing machine out from underneath all the clothes and fabric... maybe I might get something accomplished this weekend.
No, Jeannie, never heard of that. My toms fight but not that bad. Sometimes the hens will pick on a submissive tom once he has been whipped, though, and they can get pretty mean about it.
Interestingly my black lab Rosie hates to see them fighting so she breaks them up. I sometimes stop her because they do need to establish who is King Tom, I think, but usually I don't. She breaks up the cats when they fights, too.
Right now none of my turkeys are fighting. They seem kind of depressed, like they are mourning the four I butchered earlier in the week. Two of the three dominant toms were among the casualties, so maybe that messed up their social system.
But then, I've had turkeys for less than a year, so who knows?

Now that you are down to one job and a somewhat normal work week, maybe you can start hitting the yard sales and thrift shops. That's where we pick up our best stuff. My rubber boots I have been wearing out this weekend we picked up at a yard sale for two bucks.
