Congrats on the newest babies! What fun and how neat they are "talking with one another" probably comparing notes on their incubating process lol

I was "awake" really early, posted a note and went back to bed. It was tough to re-awaken when I needed to get out of bed. Having had my cereal and about 30 minutes on the computer, I am "awake" again.

Getting ready to put eggs into the Sportsman. Feel free to remind me how crazy I am when I start griping about the challengs of brooding chicks when it is still cold outside.

Betsy...I too have had silkies and showgirls hatching the last 2 days. They are so adorable and tiny. I had to do some rotating of my birds to make room for them. They got to take priorty in the house....something I said I wouldn't do again. However, with the temps the way they are I am not going to take the chance of losing them if a light burns out. We've had to combine our chickens so much that.

This may be a dumb question but when there are more than one color in one pen will the like colors mate or is it a free for all? I think I know the answer but ....just askin

No challenge..... you can do it. Just remember it should start warming up in a month so its all good to go.... Start incubating! lol

There isn't a particular age - just the weight. Most "dual purpose" chickens are processed when they can no longer lay sufficient eggs to pay their rent. RIR were selling for about $12 at Blanchard. Since Fletcher is this coming weekend and fairly close to y'all, you might see what you can get for them as layers, rather than processing them......
Young hens/pullets will be more tender however than if you wait to process an older hen. You should be able to fry a young hen, instead of needing to stew or roast the bird when it is older.

Yes, definitely a free for all. But, with some of the parents the same variety, you at least have a chance of getting some "pures."

Maybe pure silkie but not pure in color.... Say they look partridge but are carrying the porcelain gene due to the hen was partridge and dad was porcelain..... then that partridge baby could likely throw some porcelain babies.... you just never know.
