By all means feed them, just don't feed them yogurt as it will diminish or cancel the effects of anti-biotics. I would also give them a bit of canned cat food to boost their protien level and help them through this. Later on one the meds are finished I will give you a booster recipe to help them regain weight and start the good bacteria back in the digestive tract.

Smith Poultry Supply up in Ks is where I get my meds. The LS-50 is water soluble but it is pricey, about 30 dollars per bottle but you only use 1 tablespoon per gallon of water and use that as a sole source of water for 4 days after symptoms disappear. Eggs are to be either tossed or boiled up and fed back to the birds for two weeks after stopping meds.

The LS-50 is under the heading of anti-biotics on the left side bar and they offer overnight shipping. Continue with what you are doing and then swap them over when you get the other meds.

When you call you are dealing with the owners of the company and they are very nice to deal with.

Really sorry you lost the chick but don't beat yourself up over it. From time to time things like this happen.

Yeah, I know, but that's what I do.
Does anybody know of a site where I could see picture differences' during incubation?

I haven't read through everything but what meds are you giving the birds? there is a wonderful antibiotic called LS-50 that should fix them up in just a day or two. Some feed stores carry it but most of the time it has to be ordered online. I will post where I get it in a few minutes. ( I type really slow)

I wholeheartedly agree with using LS-50 for a respiratory illness. The stuff is great and always works when I've used it. But, isn't it just 1 teaspoon per gallon? That's the dosage I've always used.

And absolutely feed them. I've never heard of withholding feed from sick birds. Of course, I'm not an avian specialist or veterinarian

Looks like NNbreeder is off line - but his handy dandy Flock Health handout has the dosage of LS-50 as 1 teaspoon per gallon water.

Send me a PM with your snail mail address and your real name if you would like for me to mail you a copy of the handout on Flock Health that "Dr. Les" prepared for the Fall '09 POOPS.

Since you asked for opinions, here is mine and I hope I don't offend you.

I wouldn't expect anyone to take back birds that I bought. If they weren't sick when you bought them, they could have become sick afterward from other sources such as stress, bacteria, viruses, environment, etc. after they left his place. Please give them antibiotics and hope they recover.

You didn't mention how old they were, but if they are very young, please provide a heat source for them, especially in this weather. Try to keep them away from your other birds, if you have any.

We've bought birds from various sources thru the years, and sometimes have had them die for no apparent reason. I would never expect the seller to reimburse me for them, nor accuse them of selling sick birds.

The person that sold the birds to you could be a reputable person and may very well be NPIP certified. Please do not post a warning on craigslist unless you are absolutely certain this person knowingly sold you sick birds. You purchased these birds knowing they were not the variety you wanted. Were they sick when you bought them?

My husband and I raise birds and sell quite a few at various places, such as flea markets, auctions and on craigslist. I would be very upset if someone bought birds from me and they became sick after they left my place. But, I would be very wary of someone that accused me of knowingly selling sick birds and expecting me to take them back or reimburse them for those that died. I would also be EXTREMELY upset if someone posted a warning on craigslist about me.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you continue to learn about poultry and I hope you enjoy all these wonderful Okies, as I do. This is a great place to learn from each other and enjoy discussing our poultry addictions

Help!!!!!!!! I have been getting two eggs from my pullets that have started laying, I have three Australorps and two White Rocks,. Sunday I got three eggs, Happy Mothers Day! Well, I haven't had but two a day since then which seemed a little odd. Today I went to get the eggs and there were two eggs and some yolk in the nest and there was no shell chips! Is one of the hens eating her egg? How in the world do you figure out what is going on? That nest is very secure, so it isn't a varmit. Help friends, I do not know what to do! Never ran into something like ths before!
Thanks so much for your feed back,
Kathy
