Okies in the BYC The Original

I guess I've missed something. Unless you're going all organic, I don't know why you're feeding your chicks nonmedicated feed; but I'm sure you have a good reason. Having had coccidiosis in one of my early hatches of keets hatched by hens, I do feed medicated. However, I'm very careful to find it with Amprolium in it. I know they don't need Bacitricin unless they become ill, and Monensin is OK as a coccidiostat for chickens, but not guineas. My guinea keets get nonmedicated game bird starter, but they (as well as most of the chicks) aren't on the ground until they are old enough to not be very susceptible to coccidiosis.

But wait, I do have a single comb NN hen that lays green eggs. Now I'm confused too!

I have straight combed EE's that lay a blue egg but they aren't NN's.
While we are in the neighborhood of all of this, do you still have that NN roo with the puffy cheeks that you got from me last year?

Actually, it is very difficult to find non-medicated chick starter - so you may want to call Atwoods first to see if they have it. I am feeding game bird starter to the ducklings, because I couldn't find non-medicated chick starter in any of the 3 feed stores where I get feed.

King's has Start-grow-lay and I don't think it is medicated.

Cement and Newcastle are the 1st Saturday of each month.
Blanchard is the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
Fletcher is the 3rd and 5th Saturday of each month.

Every Saturday morning they have the Guy Rose Auction just outside of Perkins.

Those are just the weekend auctions that are West of I35 (although Perkins is actually a little East of I35, toward Stillwater.) I am not familiar with auctions North of Tulsa or East of I35, but here is the link to the Oklahoma auction thread

Maribeth, you are too sweet. I was hoping someone would post that link. So it looks like I may be at the Blanchard auction next weekend. Well that is barring any complications between now and then. Hey I just remembered, next weekend is payday too!!!

Now on to a little rant . . . .

I seriously hate neighbors who refuse to confine their animals!! I have a neighbor that is about a block away. They have a Brittany bird dog that is obsessed with my animals . . . all of them. He circles my chicken pens . . . never tries to get in . . . and loves to antagonize my dogs. DH has shooed him away several times with the help of the BB gun, but he keeps coming back. Today we caught the mongrel breeding our pup. she is barely old enough to come into her first cycle, but he had her. As town clerk, I went and spoke to the owners today. I cited the town's ordinances and even took the book as backup. DH and I were very civil towards them . . . which is very surprising if you know my husband . . . They threatened harm towards us if we harmed their dog. After two lengthy conversations with the Sheriff's office and a call to the town's board of directors, we have permission to shoot on sight. I hate doing it, but something has to be done about it. She is too young to have pups and the only other option is to have her spayed. We don't want her spayed. We were waiting until she was a year old and having a planned breeding to get some good working pups.

Okay . . . rant complete.

It is very difficult to go all-organic, as that requires buying organic feed. But many of us prefer to raise our meat birds without medication. So, we are organic at least in that sense.

Besides being bad for our own immune systems, routine medication of animals of any sort merely creates superbugs resistant to any form of medication, eventually. It's an arms race we humans can't win.

Take her to the vet tomorrow and get a shot to abort the pups. Then send neighbor a bill for it.

We called every vet around and were only able to get a hold of one because of the holiday weekend. He did however inform us that they have now made the shot illegal. That was my first thought when Andrew told me what had happened. We used to give it racing greyhounds to keep them from coming into heat. My parents raised them.

Most Cocci meds are Thiamin blockers. Basically they starve the Cocci bugs to death.

I have read that there are 2900 different strains of Cocci but fewer then 20 can affect birds. Been troubled with Scours in hoof stock? That's Cocci too. There are even strains that can infect humans.

Since Cocci is species-specific if you raise calves feed them goat's milk and vise-versa. You won't ever have a case of scours crop up.

its because we are butchering these guys in a couple months... thats why I am going non medicated preferably in their starter feed. normally I would start my normal chicks off on the medicated stuff through one bag... but because these are our Cornish Rock X and will be fat and ready in a few yes we want less medication as possible in their meat and system...
