Al,
I am all in favor of a playoff system. We'll never have one for 2 reasons: 1) You'll still have to rely on sports writers to determine which 16 teams are allowed in the playoffs. Some teams are still going to feel left out. And 2) The universities are not about to give up the kinds of money you're talking about eliminating. Bowls and their sponsors make the multi-million dollar salaries for coaches and college presidents possible.
I don't think that there is any doubt that the Florida Gators are the national champions. Some say that USC deserved consideration. Perhaps, but on the strength of their schedules you have to give it to Florida. And Utah? Come on. They went undefeated in the mountain west conference. Big deal. That's like being the smartest retard. It just doesn't matter. As for texas, all that mack brown did was prove that he has absolutely no class. The longhrns had a great year, but they were rightfully left out of the big 12 and national championship games.
So yeah, I'd like to see a playoff system but I don't believe it's ever going to happen. It would expend the season too far and cost the schools too much money.

I agree with the fact that $$ does play a big part in this, and most people in favor of a playoff system may not be aware of that. I agree Utah should not be crying about not getting a shot. Then trying to come up with a fair system that eliminates the sports writers as final word and a trying to figure out a fair alternative may prove to be to tough a job and may cost more $$ than it is worth.
Enjoy your weekend
