Okies in the BYC The Original

Ok I have a question (that will probably get me into bigger trouble than I'm already in).

I borrowed P&B's 'bator. Out of 42 eggs, I got 12 (well, 13... but I had to cull one). Already determined that my problem was humidity... they were sticky after hatching, and soft around the belly, which NN told me was indicative of too high humidity.

My problem is that I don't know what else I would like to hatch. I'm not usually one to have many many different kinds of *anything*... usually, 1 kind of dog, 1 kind of cat, 1 kind of parrot, and so on. However, which the chickens I already have 6 MFC bantams, which I have no intention of giving up, but they make lousy layers in regards to eating the eggs. I have a black sex link pullet that is around 5-6 months old, a speckled sussex pullet & a mystery pullet, both between 4-5 months old and 12 three week old mutt babies. I'm not mentioning the eggs in Monty's bator because well they aren't hatched yet. LOL

The chicks I'm thinking about selling or giving away all but one or two... but other than that, I'm waffling. Someone on Craigslist has Welsummer chicks available at least last time I checked... but I don't know if I trust that. Personally, I need pullets/hens, not roosters. I'm tempting fate and it's already a possibility that I'll get caught because of my bantam roosters... I can't afford to have a standard size rooster hanging around. It also makes me very very hesitant to hatch any eggs, because then what do I do with the males? I don't have the space/ability to raise them for the freezer.

Rock and a hard place... completely confused.

Are you wanting to hatch for sale or egg production or what?

Foo-foo birds like Polish and Silkies are always hot but from your posts I really think that you would like some of the more rare breeds like Dorkings or New Hampshire reds or something like that.

Forgot to add. Monty could get you in touch with Michael and I am sure he would take the roosters off your hands.

:lauFarie- You don't have to raise them till they are grown and crowing. Every hatch is a little more experience under your belt so that when you get them "to die for" eggs you will know what to do! Theres always someone on here willing to take extras off you hands. Don't know if I have anything you might want to try (EE bantams, belgian quail bantams, aseels are lAying now) but I would be glad to send you some eggs if you need them. Okay, have I enabled you enough!lol.

Last year I had a horrible hatching rate. Well actually I had a pretty rough year all around but I think things are looking better. This year I have decided to order chicks from several different hatcheries. MyPetChicken and Ideal you can order pullets in some breeds. MyPetChicken has more breeds that you can order just pullets. I may try hatching a few chicks but I am going the hatchery route this year. Also I am planning to order bourbon red poults from several places to diversify my bloodlines. I would be willing to go in with you on a order if you decide you may want to try ordering from some of the hatcheries. Since most require a minimum order of 25 birds it would make it more affordable for two or more to go in together on a couple of orders.
I am so looking forward to chick season!!

Good evening everyone!

It has been a busy day. We took senior pictures again today. I am waiting to see how they turned out. Went to a mans house that had an awsome collection of classic cars! Cody picked a convertible camero SS, it was an awsome car! I could of stayed there all day looking at them.

I have spent my evening grinding deer meat. I still have more to do but I am wore out. It will have to wait. I am back to work tomorrow and when I get home it's time to get out the Christmas decorations.

Lady I think NN had a good idea on the roo's. I know that I have now decided that I will butcher but I would for sure auction them if I had one close.

Lol
I like it when people get interested in our thread. I think they see that high number of posts and think we're a cult or club or something.

Faerie - Wish I had the dilemma of what to hatch next! You should find some Russian Orloffs.

Q - I wanted to show her, but with everything I've had going on, and with finals sneaking up on me, I decided I should wait. What are your kiddos going to be showing? I'm sure you've told me already, sorry.
