My DH has always been pretty supportive of whatever I do. As far as the chickens go, he
loves fresh eggs. I never thought I'd see the day that he would get so excited about an stupid egg! I can't tell you how many times I've caught him down at the henhouse, just watching them (chicken tv?) and listening to the happy sounds they make. Since his stroke, chickens are pretty mucht he only livestock he can safely take care of on his own. The goats are a bit too rowdy, and the horses could really hurt him without meaning too if they spooked or got silly.
Needless to say, he's planning on jury rigging the grandkids old playpen into a makeshift brooder so we can get some babies in a couple of months. Our henhouse is plenty big enough for our needs, but we need to build a run so they can go outside. He refuses to go to Lowe's or Home Depot and pay their prices for lumber, so on nice days, he and his father are happily searching junk piles and salvage yards for posts and materials. Our pen will look gawdawful, I'm sure, but it will hold the hens just fine.
We don't plan on showing anything so we are happy with mutts. 8-year old grandson and 5-year old granddaughter got the bug, though! We went to the Shawnee show since it was so close to home. They each picked out breeds they were interested in. They will be researching their chosen breeds, and will help PoPo build coops to house them, when they've saved up enough $$! Grandson has come over every day after school to help PoPo with the chickens and is always asking what chores need doing and how much will we pay him!
