Well we postponed the Christmas Eve get together at MIL's. They say the roads are pretty bad. All of the interstate roads are closed in the OKC metro area. I am guessing we have about four or five inches of snow on the ground so far and a lot more blowing sideways.
You guys in the East better get where you are goingbecause when it hits it is a whole different world.
I went to the pen to check on the birds. All were fine, although one pen of Welsummers looked like they had played in the rain and then froze.
Anybody want Welsummer Frizzles? I moved all of them into the big pen and the roo into a pen of younger birds. Hopefully they will be tooo cold to fight.

Our Christmas Eve & Christmas Day get-together with relatives has been posponed 'til Sunday & most of my relatives live less than 10 miles away, here in Tuttle.

I had the pleasure of going to Mustang (about 10 miles away) to babysit my granddaughter this morning, since both my daughter & son-in-law work for the State & don't have any leave because of the baby. Anyway, it was freezing rain and icy on my way there, and a blizzard on my way back. The State let everyone go home, but my daughter's car broke down. They towed her car to the dealership & my son-in-law was able to pick up my daughter & bring her home.

We definitely have blizzard conditions here. The snow or ice pellets sure hurt when they hit the face. Gerald walked around out back & said all the chickens are in their sheds & houses. I just hope the hutches are all ok. They have tarps on them, but that might not be good enough. I don't think I'll even go out to feed today ... but I might ... I feel so sorry for the poor birds. The turkeys of course aren't getting in their shelters.

Gerald checked on our new buckling fainting goats. They are in a pen on the south side of the barn under an overhang and both are hiding in a large igloo dog house. They're definitely doing fine.

Oh, and Gerald said this weather is just like what he remembers while growing up in South Dakota. Brrrr .... I don't like this one bit!

I guess if the birds don't survive this blizzard ... well we'll be re-stocking in the spring.

So much for global warming, huh?

All the highways in the OKC metro area are closed right now. There's about a 20 car pile-up on I-40. I sure hope you don't have family that have to drive far.

Years ago, my father was briefly stationed in either North or South Dakota for a short while. We stayed in Oklahoma, since he was only going to be there a short while. He told us that he had never been so cold in his life, as he was there.

Yippee! I'm home - thank you one and all. Thanks Betsy for your generous offer of a safe haven if I needed it. You were right - I was just past your turn off when I got your message. Now that I'm home safe and looking back at the trip - it really wasn't all that bad. There were a few times out west when the wind turned the blowing snow into whiteout conditions for a while - and there were more than a few people out without their lights on! Don't forget to turn on your lights if you must go out.

Now for my report:

I had a great time with my family - I got to see all of my aunts, uncles and cousins on my dad's side of the family. The only people who didn't make it were my brother and his family. We ate tons and played a lot of games....and I brought lots of food and treats home with me. Plus, it seems Teach gave me an entire deer, so bring on the blizzard - I'm set!

On my way out Tuesday I had the privilege of touring Betsy's Silkie and Showgirl Emporium as well as SplitSocket222's Oriental GameFowl Preserve. Talk about both ends of the chicken spectrum! I never knew there was so much variety. I had never actually touched a Silkie-feathered bird until I was at Betsy's. I can understand the fascination with these birds - they are truly wonders of nature - I might have to get some someday so I can spend more time examining them - their black faces, blue earlobes, all that fluffy fluffiness. I really liked the Showgirls, too!

I seem to remember a scene from the first Jurassic Park movie in which the family looks out across a plain and sees hundreds of "flocks" of different dinosaurs grazing together peacably. That's just what SplitSocket's place is like. His birds are spectacular. I didn't think I was a fan of Asils, Shamos, Cubalayas and Siapans, but I am now. I think I may be able to tell a bantam Shamo from a bantam Asil now...and the Saipan's with their snaky necks! And the CUBALAYAS! So many vibrant colors - and they are deservedly proud creatures!

Although they are both modest to a fault, Betsy and Richard are generous about sharing their knowledge and I learned a lot - but I don't know how much of it will stick! One of the most interesting things to me was listening to them ask each other questions. It's also very apparent that they really care about their birds - the history and preservation of the breeds, their habitat and nutrition, and both breeders will take great measures to nurse ailing individuals back to health.

Teach and his younger son Clayton both seemed very please and excited about their new chickens! Titus tried to train Roy and Clayton to throw a ball, but they didn't do that great at it. Titus says they may be examples of those "untrainable humans," but I think they were just too anxious to see their new birds!

We won't have to get on the highway to go to our son's house in Del City, but 3 hours ago our son was trying to figure out how to get home without going down Sunnylane, because of all the accidents they had passed on their way to the grocery store. I just think it is nuts to go outside if it isn't essential.

Gerald wants to get out with his ex-army truck, 6 wheel drive and go help stranded people. I think he'd better just stay inside. He doesn't even know if the heater works in it.

Maybe I can convince him to just go feed the chickens if he wants to get outside in this blizzard.
