The scent glands must be removed in the very early stages of life. In older animals they get too much callous material built up around them. I have known people through the years with skunks that were not de-scented and kept as pets.
A skunk can only fire off his scent about once every month, if you smell skunk on two nights in a row then you have at least 2 skunks. They are fascinating little critters.
My dad had a skunk as a child... it was his favorite pet growing up. He found two babies after the mother was hit by a car. They were de-scented, then he kept one and a friend of his kept one.
