OK! Raise your hand if you have been watering your birds and had nasty -poopy water splash up and hit you in the face--or better yet--in the mouth! Yep--happened to me...but I couldn't help but laugh because I KNOW I am not the only one! YUCK!!!

WHERE IS EVERYONE!?

I have been lurking all day (reading at work since I can't post from there until BYC resets my password) and the thread has been so slow! What are all of you guys doing?

This evening chores weren't as hot and sticky as they were on the weekend...I think the humidity is getting lower!

Well we didn't get our turkey pen started, but we did get the plans drawn out. We are trying to use our old first chicken coop but is is too small and HOT so we are going to revamp the whole thing and make it a bit larger and add a pen (our chickens that lived in that coop were free ranged every day so we never needed a pen...until the coyotes started picking them off!). I am really excited about the turkey pen as we have 4 poults in a 150 gallon stock tank-brooder...they are too big for it now and I really don't like them to be so crowded.

What's for dinner everyone? We are having Okie green beans and red potatoes, tri-tip roast, beets, and refrigerator pickles...YUM!!

Just got back from Pizza

and hey MAT you ate enough for all of us tonight.. tee hee..

Anyhow for anyone who would like to join myself and the family with Doc and Peaches and Lil Montana, we meet at the pizza place at 6pm... Would love to see others join us too other wise we will have to resort to talking about ya'll behind your backs.. HA HA HA Just kidding.

Today was a good day, got some mowing done and even cleaned up a lil bit in the house(still recovering from the work we did on the keeping room and the carpet we had installed in the keeping room and our bedroom).. Hope you all are enjoying your Monday Evening

trying to keep the chickens cool, was afraid i'd lose one of the BA girls, but put her in the tub to cool down, she ended up falling asleep in the tub on my arm...she was really gasping and zoning out before the tub-

stay cool guys!!

Sooner did you get that evening off you wanted! hope you were able to rest up some.
We hit 100 today. I stayed in till evening ,just don't like being out in the heat that much. Birds seem to have come thru okay.

Hey everyone!

Quick ninja post before heading off to bed. Kinda had a slow day. Got the new washer and dryer in, which was not fun, but now I can do laundry so that is always great. Uli is visiting his kids so I have the house to myself tonight, which is kinda nice.
Ok I have a question for all of you that use broodies to hatch. I have four broodies, two of which is sitting in the same nest. What do I do with the chicks when they start hatching? Can I take them away from the broodies and they will continue to sit? Three of the nesting boxes are off the ground, should I move them to the floor or wait? I am worried when the chicks hatch they may fall out.

I thought hatching using an incubator was stressful, this broodie thing is much worse.
Well thanks before hand for any information you all can provide.
I hear my pillow calling seductively to come rest my head for a while, I think I must heed the call of the pillows.
Night all!

The reason to use broodies is so that you STOP worrying about the chicks. LOL I had a broody hatch a clutch on the bed of a two-ton truck and the four foot drop to the ground didn't affect any of them.

Whether you let the hen raise them or take the chicks is totally up to you. If you let the hens raise them there will probably be some losses due to things like getting into the water bowls or attack by other hens or whatever.

Having a hen sit eggs through the summer heat can be hard on them because they do lose condition over time. Depending on the hen it can be fatal too.

Broodies should also be seperated from the flock. other hens may still continue to lay in the nest along with the broodie's eggs and that is not good either.
