Yeah, I was kinda surprised to hear that the dog owners were already coming up the driveway (as it sounded when I read the OP). Irresponsible dog owners usually don't "notice" their dog missing for at least a day

But still, in the middle of a fight like that - there wasn't much else to do. Don't beat yourself up and don't let the neighbor's attitudes get to you.

What if it was 17 of their pets that died due to your one pet? Would they be civil to you then? I doubt it, even if you didn't call them poop and treat them horribly. I think you're being awfully kind about it, considering the way they acted.

I have a dog a little dog but HE stays on our property! The shepherd has been seen before loose been along time ago though, we knew after the death whose it was as soon as the neighbor pulled down the drive. We have had no past contact with said dog so didn't know if it was mean or nice to people. Wasn't going to take a chance as I have three DD's that like to go outside sometimes too! Another neighbor called a few minutes ago saying the original neighbor called them saying what happened and how mad they were and neighbor who called said they sided with us as they think the original neighbors kids shot her ducks last summer with pellet guns! Guess we'll here from more neighbors in the next few days.... I'm going to find out if our area has leash laws, I don't thnk so, but does that matter really??

The way the dog owner handled the situation/treated the OP was irresponsible......ignorant.......and heartless. There was enough information in the post to show lack of responsibility.

My advice is to not talk to other neighbors about the incident. It is between your family and the family of the dog. All this :taking sides: isn't going to do much except to alienate people. They all mean well, but emotions are running very high right now.

Everyone needs a day to calm down.

Another 'dog kills chicken' thread!

Im very sorry for you - been there, done that. You have my condolences. Often, we worry so much about the other problems that we overlook the obvious.

Take note fellow BYC'ers - the dog may be mans best friend, but that rarely seems to extend to chickens.

I know if my dog got loose and killed someone else's chickens and they in turned killed my dog I would be upset but my dog should not be loose. I would do the same thing if someone was killing my birds. I feel so bad for you DD. She lost so many pets, they only lost one. You did want you had to do. I stand behind you 100%. A pet is a pet no matter what it is. I hope you take them to court and win. Good luck with it and keep us updated.

AGREED!! I'm just telling you all EVERYTHING that is happening as it happens...I remain understanding but hurt!

What gets me is the neighbor seemed to imply that as the dog was killing the chickens we SHOULD have taken it by the scruff of the neck instead and held it till they could come get it! It had NO collar on! AND this was a BIG dog!!

It don't matter if your chickens were walking around with a sign that said "eat me" on it. The dog owner is responcable(sp) for the dog regardless. I don't think your neighbor would have a leg to stand on in court,if it goes that far. I understand that things were said in the heat of the moment but I think that the neighbor should have been a little nicer. I would demand pay for the chickens, no question. Sorry for your loss

and having your daughter seeing that. She sounds like a scrappy thing, beating that big dog, and I hope things work out for you. I feel your pain because the gut next door has a pit mix that gets out sometimes and has charged me before. I have warned them and I will issue no more warnings, if you get my drift! I hope things work out.

i am sorry i just have to chuckle... well snicker! When my daughter was attacked they said the same thing. Mean while 2 were coming up the trail and the one that attacked her was killing her gpa's dog.
To find out that they were giving it rubbing alchol to make it crazy so they could fight it.
