Opinions of cold climate chicken keepers needed

Anybody warming up?
I'm getting a hot cocoa and making brownies. Anyone want some?

cocoa sounds perfect! ...

I just went outside to fill the bird feeder real quick and didn't put a coat on because I'm wearing lots of layers, and I was only out there a minute or two... and I had to shiver for 3 minutes just to feel warm once I came back in.... and we're not even as cold here as a lot of folks ( 9 deg F, at the moment)

think I'll go make myself a cocoa

OOOOhhh oh me me! Not even that cold here in NC but me loves brownies. I don't ever make a pan of brownies, because I will eat the entire thing myself. I have no self control in regards to brownies.... strangest thing too, I'm not that big of a chocolate person. I'm weird.... I know.. my SO tells me so enough. :idunno

I have a question for those of you who have their runs surrounded in plastic... do you have any issues with the type of plastic you selected? Or thickness? What have you found to be problematic? Something work out great?! I won't let the chickens out during our cold windy weather here until I wrap their run and could use some advice!! Thank you!!

Clear plastic will tend to make for a warmer space if fully or mostly enclosed due to it letting sunlight through to warm the ground and chickens.

We used 6mil opaque plastic. It is white, so keeps it bright in there. We secured it to the wood frame of the run with furring strips and screws. The only thing I will do differently next year is to have some bales of straw on hand to stack around the bottom when it’s really windy. Right now, I just have some scrap wood leaning up against the bottom to keep the breeze out. There is ventilation at the top, so the ground level and roost level stays pretty still.

I cut up a huge plastic bag my new mattress came in, lol. Stapled it up and helped keep it from ripping off the staples by putting a few bungees from 2x4 to 2x4 horizontally. I wrapped the bottom around bricks. I only covered the north and west sides because that's where our prevailing winter winds come from. My run is small tho, I only have 4 bantams. When I go inside the run, it's really nice, no wind and the sun shines on the coop warming it.

Fisher cats and eagle are both scavengers as much as predators... makes me think all the more there's a carcass or something nearby...

...and I didn't say it was cool, I said I thought it was cool :p ... and I still think it's cool to see a Fisher... but I understand why you might not with your chickens so close ;) ... I guess it's all about semantics... and the proximity to said Fisher, and ones own chickens!

In any case hope it stays out of you and your neighbors coops!

No offense taken. Sorry. Fisher cats are pretty nasty predators around here. There have been numerous reports of them going after small dogs and cats (and chickens). The one that I saw was definitely a male due to his size. He looked very healthy as well. I prefer the lovely quartet of white tailed deer that strolled by last week. That was cool!
