Congrats on the horses!

Horses are lots of fun (As long as you have the money for them! Goodness knows they can be expensive, especially here in NJ)

Anyways, I would love to be able to start with a horse from the day it is born, or even a very young one, but I do not have the time right now and probably won't for quite a few years. I've been horse back riding since I was eight nad have owned my own horse since I was ten and I still don't know all there is to know! I always learn something new!

When my other horse passed on, I was really thinking about buying a 2 year old broke black QH. She had wonderful lines, but then I thought about it and the price he was asking and realized it wasn't worth it. She had 00 feet and had already been ridden quite a bit. I didn't want to take the chance that she would one day become lame because of it.

My main recommendation is to wait until their knees have fully closed to do anything with them. Some big jumper people I have talked to wait until their horses are four or five to do any major jumping! I was very surprised to hear this! I don't think you have to wait that long, but I think one of the two biggest mistakes people make is breaking a horse too soon. The other is treating those cute little horses like dogs, because believe me, they regret it later! lol

A friend of ours had a mare that gave birth five years ago. He used to wrestle that foal and play around with it all the time. As an adult she still wants to do that and she is nearly 16 hands! Beautiful horse, but he also let her founder and she is unrideable because he doesn't want to do anything about special shoes. Never really trained her either.

Anyways, good luck! I agree with carriebrown, that sending them out is a really good option, especially with a first time horse. When I got my first horse, she was 6 and we made so many mistakes with her, but it was definitely a learning experience! Now I know so much more and that has helped me so much dealing with my new 6 year old gelding.

Do you have pictures of the other one? What breed are they?

Hi... I am pretty aware of most all of what you guys are saying dispite what you all are saying about what I know. Many times people assume others don't know what they know but that just isn't so. I have studied horses for 30 years I just never owned one. I never let an or any animal think they are human and I treat horses like horses and ducks like ducks dogs like dogs... well you get the drift. I have witnessed more people out here treating dogs like humans and it leads to neurotic animals. They know what they are from the get go and we make them think different..... even chickens. So... ya all need to take care about how you treat your chickens cause they know they are chickens problem is they think YOU are a chicken too.

lol

I wasn't trying to tell you that you would treat the horses like this, but rather that it is a common mistake people often make. I know I would want to play with a cute little foal like it was a dog.

I wasn't doubting your horse knowledge at all. Some of the best horse trainers are those that don't even own horses. Many horse vets don't own horses themselves. That doesn't make them any less knowledgeable.

I wish you the best with your horses and I look forward to updates! I still want to see pictures of the other one!

OMG! Arklady they are so beautiful! The adult horses looks so well taken care of. You know those babies are coming from a good foundation. I just love the shot of the baby looking right at the camera. He is just gorgeous.

I take offense from everyone saying not to treat a horse like a dog. My mare is 3 now and when we got her she was extremely malnurished. Almost to the point of death. She had never seen grain in her life (she was 2). She didn't trust anyone. Didn't know how to eat grain. She was so stunted she looked smaller than a yearling. Her coat was just falling out in handfuls-from malnutrition and a horrible case of lice. I put her (Zoey) in my front yard. Gave her one on one attention for several months. She had to be hand fed at first. She didn't know what the grain was so I stuffed some in her mouth and held her lips closed. She figured it out real quick. She couldn't eat a lot at one time so she ate small amounts every few hours for the first few weeks. Too much protein would have killed her. Anyways--the point I'm trying to make is that I somewhat treated her like a horse. I hug her around her neck. Kick a ball to her and she will kick it back. Whistle when I want her to come. I can do anything I want to her. She doesn't mind. But she doesn't care for men. My husband isn't able to work with her very often so she doesn't work well with men. She won't let my very experienced FIL do a thing to her. He put her an a lunge line and an hour later he walked up sweating and worn out with a cigarette hanging outta his mouth. She wouldn't move for him. Not at all. So I went out and showed him how it is done. He tried to put her halter on and she wouldn't let him. I walked up and put it right on her. I'm not very experienced with horses. Just use common sense. My FIL says I always treat her like a dog. I guess I don't know any other way. But it works.

I hope I didn't offend you. If I did, it was not my intention at all, & I'm sorry if I did.

I understand from your recent posts that you are an informed animal owner.

I liked the pictures of the stallion & mares. I'm sure you will enjoy them both.

Keep us posted with pics when you get them home.

Um, I don't offend that easily, but I do think advice should be withheld until advice is asked for I was only sharing the info and pictures. Problems with raising these little boys will be asked about as they arise. I hate letting small problems growing to huge ones. I don't like inappropriate behavior from any of my animals and that goes with horses as well.

I will treat them with a loving concern as a parent does for their child. I punished mine for innappropriate behavior as well. You can't imagine how many bad habits start in pets just because the owners don't think the animals are that smart. But they are.

I have had to rehabilitate dogs that think they are human and above me and deserve my place at the table and in my bed... Sorry bub your a dog you have a crate to sleep in thats your bed. All my dogs sleep in their dog crates and if I get up at night I don't want fleas in my bed lol... I take them out with me if I go out and they go potty at night if they need to. The crates are open to them to sleep in during the day and it is their safe zone, but they are locked in at night. Its their private place. I try not to punish them ever in their crate. That would be like me getting punished in my bedroom lol... I don't think so.

Horses are I think in many ways smarter than dogs. But exactly how I am not sure. Each have their own interesting attributes. For me I would love to have a cart horse, so if anyone knows where I can get a harness so I can do that let me know.

I have been on forums where you ask an innocent question or need help and you get raked over the coals for being a bad pet owner but believe me I know when things get out of hand quick. I have never in my life lost a dog to poor care. I check my goats feet when I can and I trim often. Most of the time they don't need it.

My biggest problem is going to be finding a reliable farrier. I have run into so many losers that have ruined more horse feet than you can imagine. One guy said that all the jobs he seemed to get was fixing problems that this other farrier caused. I spread the word the guy had to move to a new location to work. If advice is needed for me right now.... It is that I need to refresh what I know already. So a good book I can get would be good.

I just wanted to share that finally my childhood dream of having one even for a cart horse is being realized. Possibly I can even ride it. I am looking forward to it.
