Our Mixed Flock Journey!

Same with my Ruby.. she is a wonderful and fair leader... never is she a bully or aggressive! And she is rather small! View attachment 2320229View attachment 2320230
It's interesting, isn't it, WhoDat...you haven't had good experiences with Wyandottes yet I find them to be absolutely wonderful. I think getting birds from a good breeder probably helps & my Man insists the way mine get treated accounts for how docile they are. I know you spend a lot of time with your birds too & you have certain expectations from your flock members ~ as do I. Our birds are quite smart enough to figure that out!

This was one of mine when we lived in Florida. When she was just a couple months old, she went lame in one leg and spent a month or so recuperating on our enclosed porch (that's where she laid her 1st egg!). She learned to compensate by using a wing in place of the lame leg. While she liked me ok, she loved DH. She'd go limping toward him whenever she saw him, he'd pick her up and take her for walks around the yard. Of course, the other chickens didn't care for her so we built a separate run for her and her own little indoor coop.

That is true! And while I’ve enjoyed different breeds I am aiming towards an all EE flock... not because I only want one breed but because I just love them so! They are the whole package to me! And that’s not to say that I’ll never have other breeds but there are definitely certain breeds I’ll never have again! The Wyandottes for one ... no more Brahmas.. Cochins... Silkies... SS... probably no more BO either just because of broodiness...
And hopefully things will still run smoothly in my flock now that there is a cock around!

Yes, I have been gradually adding more Campines than anything else because for me that is the bird of choice. They are wonderful personalities & so beautiful. I can live with white eggs. I will be weeding out other breeds too ~ not because I don't like them but because I'd rather have more of those I really, really like. My Wyandottes are fantastic & my Aracaunas fit in quite nicely too, despite going broody on me. My Frizzle is a pain ~ but I think it's that particular bird & not the breed as a whole. I won't get more Australorps as I don't consider them a good fit with the rest of the flock & no more Favorelles either. I like my Rocks but they will go broody all summer...🙄 so I wouldn't have more than 2 of them again. I like them as they seem to keep the rest of the girls really calm & that's important to me when I have so many nut jobs running around. :lau

When I picked up my Silver Campines [just as beautiful :love] The breeder was really worried I'd be ok with them. They have something of a reputation for being difficult. :lau I assured her I knew what I was in for as I already had some Goldens but the 1st time I let them out Aoife took off on a 50' circuit of our property amongst the tree tops! 😮
