Our Mixed Flock Journey!

:hugs Thank you Bob, it is really hard, I'm sorry you had to go through this too! :hugs

We will continue to free range them in their pen...I just can't lock them up into the enclosed pen and coop, they would be so miserable and I have no desire to have them live like that. I wish we could let them roam the whole property, but as you know the dogs are a worse problem than the hawks, they have wiped out 95% of my flock in one pass before, that was why we quit keeping chickens! I'm rolling a few ideas around in my head as to what I can do to add more protection from the sky, a majority of their pen has tree's, there is really only one area and that's where most of the grass is. I will be looking at it tomorrow as I try and figure out how my girl got out today!
How big is their yard? Mine have a really nice sized yard and I have covered most of it with bird netting... I’ll see is I have pics where it shows...

You are right about that. They could stay a little closer. Both sides right!

Both of my daughters moved to other states. I have one in Virginia that is over 4 hours away and the other in Michigan over 7 hours away. They went where the jobs were. They are close enough to visit, better than Oklahoma and Washington but it could have been worse. They had to go where the jobs were, that simple.
I'm just glad that we're retired now, so it will be easier to plan trips...it just won't happen as often as this grandma/mom would like! I'm glad that your girls aren't to far away! :)

A patio umbrella and a low table sound like perfect things to make the area nice for chickens and people. I am filing those ideas away for my chicken garden which I intend to plan over Christmas so I can get started on it in the spring.
I can't wait to see what you come up with! :) I love the umbrella idea, but we deal with a lot of strong wind here and I'm not sure if it's sheltered enough from it...I would hate to have an umbrella blow over and land on any of the flock!

It's big, but I could put in more wooden posts to attach the netting to! Next time I'm out there with my husband I will broach the subject with him...you know, with...babe I've been thinking that maybe we could put up some netting...here and here and maybe we could build some table shelters for them to run under for safety, maybe here and here!!! :D ;)

Sounds like a plan! Also like a convo I’ve had before lol.

That is exactly what was cruising thru my mind. I have to fold down umbrella every time there are significant wind gusts. (my patio table umbrella) Lost 2 glass tables already when wind blew over umbrella, and table. Sad part about this,,,,, those were 42 inch tables that are not common size in homeceters. Available at specialty pool and patio centers, but pricey :old :(

The emphasis goes without saying...WE do everything together...:gig

Ouch...sorry you lost 2 tables!

Good morning, Rene!
I have a lot of catching up to do, I’ve been shopping. Mostly on-line, but I had to go to a few places for some things.
I was finished with my two week quarantine yesterday so I was ready to bust out of jail.
Good morning Kat! I'm also catching up today! I'm glad that you're free & clear now! 😊
