I definitely wouldn't want to deal with nasty weather...we live in a pretty moderate climate. Table Rock Lake is actually warmer than here in the winter, but it's also wetter. I don't know that we'd ever move there...I just like that our son wants us closer to them and he found an area that would suit us.

The weather definitely depends on your location! And it's touching that your son wants you guys closer to them

Hi everyone! We just got back home from being in town! I always head straight out to make sure everyone is in the coop...I was short one, a Welsummer! Heart sinking...I walked around inside the free range pen and didn't find any sign of her, so I went back in and told hubs that one of the girls was missing! He headed out and found her...she was sitting on top of the walkway between the coop and pen! Evidently she found another way out, but couldn't figure out how to get back into the pen...I was so relieved! We had added more fencing yesterday and I had hoped that would keep everyone contained once again! So tomorrow, I need to go out and try to figure out once again what's going on! The grass is always greener on the other side!

Oh yeah tornado country for sure! I grew up with those stinking things. When I told friends I was moving to Florida, they asked me if I wasn't worried about hurricanes. Heck no! At least with hurricanes you have some notice, the darned tornadoes would pop up out of nowhere.

Our KS wintery years would fluctuate from freezing ice to tons of snow and not much in between.

Yup. That getting shook out of your bed with panic in adult voices is not fun stuff! Of course then we moved to California and earthquakes ain’t fun either lol.

You must have been a bit further north than where my son wants us to live. I remember getting snow when we lived in Missouri too, but not as much as you experienced. We also had a tornado pass through not to far from our house. I remember having tornado drills in school. Maybe I should just stay in WA...

I think we were in the northwest portion of the state. I don’t have to worry about snow now. Bad downdrafts do happen here though

You have the extreme heat to deal with now. Seems like any place you go, there are plusses and minuses.

Very true. If it’s not tornadoes, hurricanes, heat, snow, or earthquakes it’s the volcanoes.

Thank you Bob, it is really hard, I'm sorry you had to go through this too!

We will continue to free range them in their pen...I just can't lock them up into the enclosed pen and coop, they would be so miserable and I have no desire to have them live like that. I wish we could let them roam the whole property, but as you know the dogs are a worse problem than the hawks, they have wiped out 95% of my flock in one pass before, that was why we quit keeping chickens! I'm rolling a few ideas around in my head as to what I can do to add more protection from the sky, a majority of their pen has tree's, there is really only one area and that's where most of the grass is. I will be looking at it tomorrow as I try and figure out how my girl got out today!

I also don't like them locked up. They seem so happy to be out and about. That leaves them a little responsible for themselves. You're are even better off with roosters to help.

Maybe you could create a pseudo patio cover for them with some pipes and netting? Or barring that some predator proof enclosures for them to duck under.

Um,when I lived in MO it snowed. As in the bus couldn’t pick me up for school and my dad had to ride the snowmobile to work.

I guess you know how to sex the welsumers. We didn't and ended up with a Roo roo.

When Welsummers are a day old, you can tell them apart by the intensity of their coloring. (The striping). I read this.
So, when I got mine, I looked for this and picked two girls! They were being sold as straight runs. (You know TSC wasn’t going to know the difference).
