Partridge Rock Thread

I have 8 of what appears to be this breed. This isn't allowing me to post a pic though

Sounds like a plan. There is a HUGE difference in quality, but you still run into some of the same issues.  BUT you start with way better basics.  

I ordered about 2 doz eggs and only got 2-3 chicks.  So I ordered chicks.... not taking anymore chances.  I have Silver Penciled and Partridge coming.  I am breeding my own line of Partridge Rocks too... still in development, but Horstman will get a lot of credit since his birds started the whole thing.  But they will be uniquely MINE.  I am in my Second Generation and waiting for my first eggs so I can start hatching... VERY EXCITED!  

Did you get your eggs (the ones where you only got 2 or 3 chicks) from Horstman?  I am really, really, REALLY wanting partridge rocks, but don't want to be disappointed.  I am thinking maybe chicks... I don't know.  I just want partridge rocks and they are almost impossible to find... they're rarer than hen's teeth, if you'll pardon the pun.

Yes i got eggs from him. I then ordered chicks that came this week! Yeah. Sppr and partridge. Lots of babies ! Go with chicks like the other poster said. I would prefer to get chicks when i can....better odds than with eggs.

I hatched 9 RIRs and 1 Partridge Rock from Dick's hatching eggs this week.

Next time I will order chicks:

I had 2 bantams hatch out but neither one made it. The other 4 with the broody are doing fine but it seemed the partridges needed more time to strengthen so they could push under her or not get pushed around by the other chicks. I'll try the incubator next time and see if that works out better.

I like many of the breeds Horstman has but shipped eggs or 25 chicks is more than I can deal with now.

I kind of hope it is a Cockerel--Then I can breed him to my McMurray PRs.....

I follow the logic of that, maybe swap them out later with other hens.

It's though living on the West coast sometimes.

DMRippy  if you end up with extra cockerals you do not want to keep out of the PR's  let me know.  I am in need of more for my program here.  Just post or PM I can pick up.

Extra roos.....never lol. I may forget so check back in a few months. I am sure i will have a couple. My projects are starting to lay....very excited to see what happens. There was a breach in the pen and the NH got in the pen. I am going to hatch them anyway... i can give the chicks away if the are crosses.

I love my beautiful new Partridge Rock! I have had her for 6 days and she is 14 months old. I will have to take a picture of her to post.
