pea fowl pen

nice setup! how do you secure your netting? from taller poles in the center & drape it, or what?

We have a plum tree in our new pen area & I'm thinking of draping netting over the entire tree towards the edges; I think this type would work well.

Yep the tall roosts in the pictures help hold up the netting and we have a birdhouse on a pole that holds up the center of the netting that way we can have a home for little birds inside a peafowl home.

We have a pair tree in our pen. We cut the limbs shorter to make it fit in the pen but now it is already growing through the holes in the netting so it is comming back really well. If you can include the tree without cutting it that would be awesome! We wanted to include a pecan tree in the pen, but it was just too tall to fit, it was too bad because it would make a great roost for the peafowl.

@Andy: Yeah we found out about the cheep netting on ebay from a lady who sold us our first peafowl. There is a peafowl breeder that we love to visit and look at all the cool birds he has (he has all sorts of exotic birds not just peafowl) and one day while we were there all of the birds started making a big ruckus all at once it was very loud. The guy then said, "They see a predator." And all of a sudden a HUGE owl comes flying over all the pens and the guy got his gun and shot at it and scared it off. I know the law says you can't kill them, but I think he doesn't care.

Maybe if you don't shoot them, but shoot near them it might scare them or something but if fireworks doesn't work then I am not sure, those are some tough owls.

Owls tend to perch on top of poles. They will often swoop down and flush the birds causing them to fly up into the netting. Then when their head goes through the netting they grab it. A good sign of an owl is birds dead in your pen without heads.
If it weren't illegal to do so, you could set a trap on top of a pole, catch it and disposed of it.

Owls are too smart for their own good. I discovered another villan the other day attacking one of my baby chickens that are free range. A FOX! I was absoltuly stunned when i saw this fox attacking a baby chick at 2:00 in the afternoon with myself and other family members out and about. I'm ordering netting and buying more wire and I'll be turning the chicken/fowl yard into a giant bird cage to protect them from these predators. I guess catching a chicken would be easier then catching a wild rabbit any day.

When scarecrows and lights don't work agaist owls, break out the radio and give your birds something to listen to a night. Put a radio on a pole at night with it on to keep owls away. Its been working for me so far but i'm sure the owls will catch on to it like everything else. Say No To Owls! lol:D

That is really cheap for netting, I'll have to get some of that. Can you use the netting for the sides or just for the top? Could I keep pheasants and peafowl together?

I would use fencing for the sides and just the netting for the top. Yes you can keep pheasants and peafowl together. A lot of peafowl owners keep lady ahmerist pheasants with their peafowl. I know a lady who even has guinea pigs in with her peafowl.

Perches, I'd use either tree branches or 2x4's, probably both. I don't know about nesting areas. My dad has some ornamental grass that I'll probably snatch some of to put in my peas' pen...hopefully the hen will use that to nest in
