Will a long stick work for support?

I don't think so. They don't climb like green beans.

I use a piece of spare fencing supported by t-posts. I just use zip ties to attach the fencing to the posts.

I climb mine up chicken wire. Chicken wire has to be good for something... And for peas and beans is it.

Peas have tiny tendrils and need tiny things to wind onto. Garden-grown bamboo with the branches still attached, chicken wire, strings, old tennis nets--all these have what peas need to get going. Use the long sticks to support the weaker material.

Exactly! Got my first peas of the season yesterday!

My first peas showed up this morning, too! I dunno what happened, but yesterday morning when I watered, there were a few flowers but no peas. This morning, there are at least a dozen or so pods and a whole bunch more itty bitty ones just bustin' out!

I use green wire 2x3 inch fencing, nailed to a couple of 2x4s for my peas to climb. It works very well.

To support our beans and peas, we use cattle panels that we cut down to size and stick into the ground after cutting the bottom part until just a "spike" protrudes.

I voted for long stick with cross pieces! LOL All LOL aside If your new at the garden and garden on new groung.Consider seed Inoculation.If needed it can make the diff between Small crop and WOPPER CROP.All legumes peas/beans require Inoculant if planted in new ground..Once there planted in ground with Inoculant for a couple years, its now in your soil and you should not have to add it again .Check it out its money well spent (just a few dollars)....cva34
