Peafowl 201: Further Genetics- Colors, Patterns, and More

Wow, how interesting! What's her breeding?

-Kathy

I call her daddy Pied Piper, he is an India Blue Pied White Eye, (single factor) split Cameo, and Black Shoulder, he also throws Silver Pied. The mother is either an IBSP or Cameo SP, I don't know which but obviously she is split BS.

I think she may be losing a bit of the black face, the opposite of what you would expect in a male BS. The pictures I just posted are about two or three weeks apart starting with the newest first.

I really excited for you! Are you going to breed the same pair next season?

-Kathy

Yes, they have been together for two years now. Along with those two hens will be one coming three year and two coming two-year-old daughters this year. Two of the daughters are Cameo Pied WE and one IBSP, so some more interesting chicks will be produced.

This trio is out of an Opal Silver Pied cock, the WE really stands out.

" out of an Opal Silver Pied " ....and the peahen ...was ??? not an Opal peahen !
We can see the white eyes but the silvering too ! .... it's not Opal colour !.... but they are split Opal !

Some crosses like that do not show white eyes ... why?

I figured these were just split to Opal, not pure Opal. Maybe that is what KsKingBee meant.
My Opal WE girls only have a throat patch. Which may or may not mean they are true Opal WE but I know they threw a WE son from my Bronze peacock, whom also had produced a WE daughter from his Bronze mate. Neither of my Bronze showed ANY indication of carrying WE but they sure produced a Bronze daughter that is showing WE feathering on her back. I am learning more from my own breeding than I could ever read and learn.

You also think that a rooster alone can produce peachicks, here at home it always needs a peahen and a peacock. I tried but it doesn't work ... how do you do!
For you the genetics of the mother doesn't count?

A split Opal is never Opal color because he has only 1 gene Opal .... to be of the colour Opal he need 2 gene Opal.

I think a lot gets lost in translation. The peafowl in KsKingBee's photo did not look Opal but had an Opal parent so are split to Opal and have the WE gene, too. They look India Blue. I bred my Opal WE hens to a Bronze peacock and got silver pied but also got a India Blue WE peacock. I record all my breeding and hatching. I think you are losing some information in the translation between us. I do believe hens give as much as the peacock but some genes interact well together and show who the parents were and others just show up as IB, like my peacock from the Bronze father and Opal WE mothers. He is an IB WE.

Sorry, I guess I should state the obvious for those that don't know, or English is their second language. Yes, this trio are India Blue White Eye split Opal and probably BS as well as the mother was an IBBS hen. You only need one parent to make WE, but it will be a single factor, or gene, White Eye. A single factor bird will have a few white eyes where a double factor WE bird will have most all the eyes being white.

Thanks. That is what I thought you meant and then wondered what I said that was wrong.

They are lovely birds. Are you breeding back to Opal for Opal WE or using them for something else?
I am hoping my Opal WE hens crossed back with the son from one of them will give me more Opals to work with since the pair I gave to a friend have not been bred for their potential nor have I received eggs or pea chicks from them like I should have.

Congratulations on your 10,000th post!

This trio is a Feb 2016 hatch so they have some time to mature yet. They will stay with daddy, Opal SP, just in case the hens are mature enough to lay, I am not counting on it...
