A little delay but I can pick the eggs up at Thursday around noon. đź•›

Now I have a question about waiting and storing shipped eggs before putting them under a broody.
Do I keep them at room temp or a bit colder ? Is 12 hours rest enough? Or is 24 hours s minimum? Do I store them with the point up?

They will be packed in a little toilet paper + in an egg box for normal sized eggs. And will be transported only 5 km in a steady bike bag.

I believe @Erba or @abpatchy have bought fertilised and shipped eggs before. If you are not sure I can post the question in a new thread.
Woohoo almost and than the waiting game begins :celebrate last year I've let postNL ship my booted bantam eggs from Zwijndrecht to Vlissingen. I recieved 8 fertile eggs, wich I've let rest for 6 hours before I put them under my broody. I just cant remember if it was point up or down:confused: I candled at day 8 or 9. If I had a quiter, I could get out the bomb. All hatched at day 21.
So I don't think 5 km will be all that rough.

@BDutch what eggs will you be putting in the broody?
BTW does anybody have those square Chines incubators? Yellow lid, plastic.. for 48 or 56 eggs.
No.. I have a (well actually two) Heka incubators. I don't know what is available in Bulgaria. But those chinese incubators have a reputation of being egg cookers over here. A lot of them don't keep the right temperature or humidity. Or they show the wrong temps or humidity. You might end up killing your chicks... or a lot of them have health issues (crooked toes, spraddle legs and other).
If you can get something that is of a better quality. Otherwise you will buy twice... once cheap... the next time a better quality one. Or get yourself some chickens that will go broody like silkies or wyandottes.

I've missed some pages:hmm
I love easter, so I've decorated the house, and maid lots of nicely stuff applepie, french toast, fresh orange juice, croissants, bread with jam
We have had a nice relaxing easter, we ate brunch for two days with the two of uss.:jumpy
That sounds lovely!!!

@abpatchy We don't have much choice of incubators here. I have 3 Chinese ones and yes, they have issues but I can't find anything better here. I have a Silky and I am now waiting on her to hatch me some Cochins as I heard they are good broodies. I hatch a lot and I do need incubators, but I guess purchasing a good one from abroad would be too expensive. I haven't checked what is available on eBay...

Can’t you buy one from the Netherlands if you get eggs from the Netherlands too?

hi, I hope you are all fine!
I joined this forum last year, I had presented in this thread at the time, but I haven't written here since! I read in another thread that bdutch is going to hatch with a broody (so am I)... I came here to keep up to date, haha!

Mark them with a pencil and change the fake eggs Thursday evening.
as a first time hatcher I'm totally new to this, but here is my experience with pencils:
since I wasn't sure my broody was really committed, I let her sitting on unfertile eggs for a couple of days, then I added 10 fertile eggs marked with pencil and removed the old ones... except one, because the hen was getting nervous.
fertile eggs were all marked, so I thought I'd be able to remove the last unfertile egg in another moment. on the next day the hen stood up to eat something and to my disappointment I saw that all the pencil signs were gone. I guess that the hen erased them by rubbing! no big deal, she will seat on 11 eggs, but :he

@chickengr what do you put as a bate? There are those sticky cardboards as well. I have used them too and they work. But they are nasty as the rat suffers a lot. Does not die and you cannot give it to the cat.. I used it once and when I saw the torture I removed the rest.

I use cheese. I burn it a bit so that it smells.

I tried sticky cardboards but rats are good at avoiding it. I cought only 1 years ago. and after they damaged my little chick's beaks trust me I do not care how much they suffer. I just want them far away from here.

Besides... the fines in Germany are rather steep.. I don't feel like getting caught and having to pay for not keeping to the restrictions.

that is the only reason I don't wander around. viruses are in the air and staying at home does not prevent it especially in the cities. this covid thing is the first step in the new world order. with the economies gone we can forget about life we have known. nothing will be the same.

I don't wont to argue about vaccine any more. I will say once again I am not a human rat. no experiments on me. they don't know what this virus is so how can they make vaccine in such a short time? if 5 % of what some people say what this vaccines are for is true very soon only few of us who don't get vaccinated will survive and stay healthy.

btw I was close to a person who got infected by covid and I didn't neither anyone of her family. it prooved not to be so contageous either.

@BDutch about the incubator... Remember I told you my Dutch friends are elderly people who are not chickeners. And asking them to buy me some eggs was a bit too much so I don't even want to try with incubator. Also, a small box of eggs won't cost anything to put on the truck. If I try to ship a larger incubator OEZ my ask me to pay for transport (which I would understand and don't mind if it is reasonable). But the main problem is I have nobody abroad (Netherlands, UK, Germany, etc) who would buy and ship it for me (obviously I will pay for it).

@chickengr I am putting some chocolate bar with peanuts in the trap today. So does poison work for you? I can't do poison, as my neighbor's cats may catch the mice and die. Also my chicken catch mice...

My Silky is due to hatch tonight! ..and the Cochins from the incubator too.

BTW marking eggs with pencil on a broody hen does not work - tried twice, she erases the pencil when sitting on the eggs.
