@abpatchy We don't have much choice of incubators here. I have 3 Chinese ones and yes, they have issues but I can't find anything better here. I have a Silky and I am now waiting on her to hatch me some Cochins as I heard they are good broodies. I hatch a lot and I do need incubators, but I guess purchasing a good one from abroad would be too expensive. I haven't checked what is available on eBay...
I have 2 Heka incubators and they are fantastic! Well worth the money. Check them out... At the bottom of the website, right hand side, is a list of countries that they have dealers in. Maybe the one in Romania could help you. I can definitly recommend this incubator.

hi, I hope you are all fine!
I joined this forum last year, I had presented in this thread at the time, but I haven't written here since! I read in another thread that bdutch is going to hatch with a broody (so am I)... I came here to keep up to date, haha!

as a first time hatcher I'm totally new to this, but here is my experience with pencils:
since I wasn't sure my broody was really committed, I let her sitting on unfertile eggs for a couple of days, then I added 10 fertile eggs marked with pencil and removed the old ones... except one, because the hen was getting nervous.
fertile eggs were all marked, so I thought I'd be able to remove the last unfertile egg in another moment. on the next day the hen stood up to eat something and to my disappointment I saw that all the pencil signs were gone. I guess that the hen erased them by rubbing! no big deal, she will seat on 11 eggs, but :he
I did use pencil ✏️ markings 3 times and it always worked for me. It fades but is still there after 3 weeks. Maybe the type of pencil makes a difference? Or bc you have dark eggs and mine are white?

I have seen people using (waterproof ?) markers too. But I don’t like the idea of putting chemicals on the shell bc I’m afraid it could harm the chicks 🐣 🐣 .
Why not ask this in you’re own thread? Im curious too.

I have put markers marks on the eggs and they hatched ok. Pencil works in an incubator but my broodies somehow erase it while jungling with the eggs.
@abpatchy could you please send a link to their website? I will certainly check it out.
OMG... I forgot to add the link!!! I had it copied and all.... how silly of me!!!

Of course!! https://www.heka-brutgeraete.de/en/home/

A little delay but I can pick the eggs up at Thursday around noon. 🕛

Now I have a question about waiting and storing shipped eggs before putting them under a broody.
Do I keep them at room temp or a bit colder ? Is 12 hours rest enough? Or is 24 hours s minimum? Do I store them with the point up?

They will be packed in a little toilet paper + in an egg box for normal sized eggs. And will be transported only 5 km in a steady bike bag.

I believe @Erba or @abpatchy have bought fertilised and shipped eggs before. If you are not sure I can post the question in a new thread.

I use to collect eggs from a place around 15 km away. I let them stay at room temperature for about 6 hours only. 12 hours is better.

No.. I have a (well actually two) Heka incubators. I don't know what is available in Bulgaria. But those chinese incubators have a reputation of being egg cookers over here. A lot of them don't keep the right temperature or humidity. Or they show the wrong temps or humidity. You might end up killing your chicks... or a lot of them have health issues (crooked toes, spraddle legs and other).
If you can get something that is of a better quality. Otherwise you will buy twice... once cheap... the next time a better quality one. Or get yourself some chickens that will go broody like silkies or wyandottes.

you are telling my story, lol. just add: chick killers.
