Good luck everyone who are hatching chicks or are planing on hatching this spring. I am getting really excited... in less than 4 weeks I will start collecting eggs. :wee
I got all my breeding groups separated. Ended up taking one rooster out because he developed a white tail feather and moved his girls into another group. So I got one larger group. 4 groups in total.
Here are a couple of pictures from this morning. They are from my red breeding group.

We have huge problems in the Netherlands with the H5 bird flew.
2 big factory farms where infected and cleared in the last two days :
  • 4 januari 2022 Bentelo 120.000 laying hens
  • 3 januari 2022 Blija 177.000 meat chickens
if you are interested : this is the site of our government on this matter ./birdflew infections-vogelgriep-bij-bedrijven it contains links to maps (NL) and further info. Best use google translate if you can’t read dutch.

In northern Germany are lots of cases as well. The numbers of culled animals makes you dizzy! The insane thing about this is the amount of animals that are being kept in one place.
Then on top of it they use the same workers for different stalls. They go from one "farm" to the next. That is something that they need to stop.

They say rolled oats are not good for digestion and that it can cause eggs without shell. I am not a vet, I can't say. Or of whole oats are bad too. I do know that some feed have oats. I got the info from a website of a breeder. Can't say if it is accurate.

Ok, thanks. I will be starting with Cockspur grass on Saturday.
Now, apparently rice is not as good as I thought for chicken. Some say corn is better than rice.

What do you know about oats?

corn is better but some rice is ok. can you plant cockspur grass for foraging? that would be perfect.

have you checked buses from plovdiv to athens? lakenvelder chicks are out without the lamp so they can travel. my friend is willing to exchange a pair for a LF cochin roo.

I feed whole oats in summer when it is hot. some oats in winter are ok but barley is better when cold.
