Hey, Sally. I have recently decided to switch to sand in the coop. I had to put it off because I was sick (I am feeling much better today!!) so it will be this weekend in time for the warmer temps (good timing, huh?)
ANYWAY!!! Sand is great for the brooder pen. It is fine for chicks a few days old when paper towels are no longer used. The grit is tiny enough for the chicks, and still works for my adult birds. The big benefit is that you can scoop the poop with a cat litter scoop. In the coop I will use a pitch fork with hardware cloth zip tied to it.
Just a thought.
What kind of sand?

Quote: LOL I am told that the one chick has a crest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hands in air...... These chicks WERE in with the polish chicks, but I assumed the white eggs where the polish eggs.... now I have to look that up! crest! harumfffff add polish to the Comma~ a polish Comma! oh geeeezzz I am confused!!!

EDITITED TO ADD~ thats not a crest... I have one polish in that bunch, thats just a matted head in the back

This is ingenious! Let us know how it works.

So glad you're better!

Anyone know what these 2 feather footed blue 2 week old chicks are? He only has cochin and brahma they have a tad of tan color just around the eyes, rest is blue/grey..oh and feathering seems a bit more rounded than my brahma chicks, and the comb is too tiny to see what kind. scuse the poop, its clean out shavings time later : ) I tried to search for cochin chicks but colors are all different! weird!

If he has just Cochin and Brahma,,, shouldn't they be more feather-footed ???????????

finally got the "coop" together, going to get some extras for @ a later date..extra-shingles, bins for in the nest box...Question: there was ALOT of "paper"-packing material in w/ the coop, can I shred that up and use it for "bedding" in the bins for nest box? I hate to just throw it away if I can use it for something else...Cycle-Chick..awesome idea w/ the sand, was going to use that in the run, so cool..just need a pooper-scooper!! ...aww-man......my camera is broken
