No I don't usually follow any patterns do it by the seat of my pants! Like to figure stuff out on my own and watch Utube videos to teach me new stitches! I do a lot off different things I am told I'm crafty! Can usually look at something and then make it! I guess it is a good thing to be able to do! Do you do anything other then knit?

I quilt and sew and I am learning to spin and weave. But knitting is my thing. Well, knitting and now chickens (says my husband). I just finished a hooded sweater for myself today. I need to weave in the ends, block it and find buttons.

Hey all, where is this FB page? Can someone PM me? Thanks.

What type (watt/color) of light bulbs does everybody use for their brooder??? I"m getting frustrated. The red ones from TSC are teflon coated and 250 watts. My brooder is a smaller kiddie pool, so 250 watt is overkill anyway. The light is only about 18" above floor of brooder. It's hard to find red light bulbs anymore. Found some at Kmart earlier but they are only 25 watt and the poor peepies were huddling together in a ball. I didn't like that, so I put 100 watt regular white bulb in and then they all scattered around the edges..... I finally put a 60 watt black light in, that seems better. (I was running out of incandescent bulbs in the house..) So what does everyone else use??
i start out with a 100 watt, as the chicks get older, i start dropping wattage, then i go to a bigger brooder with a 100 watt, but since its really long they can get away from the heat if they get to warm, never use the teflon coated, kills chicks fast

My first batch last April did fine with the red one from TSC. I raised it every week, and after about two weeks I just watched for body language. Now I have chicks that don't want the lamp. They are about 10 days old, and are only now 100% quiet (and not huddled) now that the light is off. It has been off for an hour, and the temp in the room is 68. Silly chicks.
Ok guys, I tried, promise I did, but I'm 54 pages behind!!! There is NO chance I'll catch up.

So, Hi to any newbies I missed.

SgtMom, I did see your question about Kniselys. They get chicks on Weds and Fris. They have a calendar on their website as to what arrives on what days so you know whether it's worth your while.

I will add anyone to the map who needs to be added to the map, if you inbox me (ylenad I have yours and will add you as soon as I post this)

Came home last night from a weekend in DE, Fiancee had been home alone. Went out to lock the chickens up, look down and have a white bodied, red-headed rooster in front of me....I don't own any of this....THEN I realize it's my Delaware roo!!!! His whole head and shoulders were COVERED in blood!!! I picked him up and carried him in the house so I could inspect/clean/care for. His one eye I thought was swollen shut, turned out to be crusted shut with dried blood. His whole comb was bloody...not sure if he got attacked....go frostbite (didn't look like it) or what...but once he was washed and blukoted (along with my hand and the sink, and the wall...) and dried (he sat still soooo well for the hair dryer!), I returned him to the coop....where he went right to the feeder, filled up...then went to attack one of the girls. He was fine this morning when I went out.
Glad he is okay. I can imagine the horror of seeing him so bloody!

Thanks for all of the light bulb replies!! It sounds like I'm in the ball park now with the 60 watt. Peeps have been pretty quiet.

Yes, be careful with the red bulbs from TSC, as others have found out from the company that they are teflon coated, but they refuse to put a warning on them since they are not specifically labeled for birds (even though TSC has them all around their chick day displays!!)

They can wipe out babies really quickly!

I will look into the reptile bulbs. Boy, they can get pricey!! I got a full spectrum UV for my tortoises.... holy crap!!!

The EcoGlow seems like a neat idea... but I'm guessing it wouldn't work very long with goslings. They turn into monster peepies pretty quickly!

I didn't have good luck with the eco-glow brooders.

Gmama, sorry you lost your EE, she was a very pretty lady.

Sally, everyone has settled in well, Thank you!!!

I have 8 Marans chicks!!!! No assisted hatching. All natural!

Next up, English Orps, b\b\s, and some Ameraucana!

Lilbrownie, I am crafty too! the shopping addiction! the chicken addiction! What's next??? Do you like cheese, its my favorite food!

I am also sad to say that I ordered 12 Mottled Bantam Cochins egg, only two are developing :-(

Good news is my hot mess of homegrown eggs are doing well! So that makes 40 for that hatch, can't wait to see what I get!

Welcome to all the new folks, happy chickening!

I also wanted to say I have two broodies already!!!

Glad to see Reggie is getting along with his new woman! She is a lot more attractive than his "roommate" here! It was really nice meeting you yesterday! The rest of your peeps are adorable!! I came home yesterday to 5 peeping Dominiques!! 3 more hatched overnight, and 2 more have external pips!! woohoo! Looks like I'm going to have to start leaving the house for the entire day once my eggs are in lockdown!

I use a grow bulb if the reds get to hot.
