We built this feeder today and layed out plans for the automatic waterer. DH will run to Lowe's after dinner. We are using a large metal water tank for a holding tank. Is using metal an issue? I will have a little cleanout valve inside the coop on the PVC to add ACV or meds or anything.

We also found all of the extra 4x4s and fence posts that we have laying around so that we can start to map out the run.
And we started laying out the deck for the coop.
And we brought some of the chickens out into a playyard in the grass so they could have their first fun in the sun!

Busy day. The girls (3 & 5) are exhausted and so am I!

WOW! You've got a lot done. Good for you! I've been a lazy bum today.

I think the rule is: No metal for waterers where you add ACV.

If I didn't already have a stomach bug, I would be sick to my stomach this morning. Went out to let the chickens out and found My favorite pekin duck, 2 young turkeys and one RIR (who stays outside with the ducks and turkeys) killed. The turkeys didn't have much damage, the RIR had his neck chew out, and most of the ducks neck and chest were gone. Could not find any signs that anything broke into my run. Don't know what to do. I guess I am going to have to force the rest of the ducks and turkeys to sleep inside. I am down to 1 pekin, 2 mallards, and 2 turkeys.
I would have been heartbroken! So sorry to hear this happened....

I however, am sad to say that NO ONE here knows how to do "chicken math".

The way it was explained to me was:
1. Eggs do not count because you never count your chickens before they hatch.
2. Meaties do not count because they are dinner.
3. Extra Roos do not count because they are dinner.
4. Roos that are for breeding do not count because they are breeders.
5. Chicks do not count because the might be male or female, never sure till they lay an egg or crow.
6. Broody hens do not count because they are incubators and not laying eggs.
7. Hens that have just hatched off chicks do not count because they are new mothers, the chicks see #5
8. Hens that are molting do not count because they are not laying eggs.
9. Old hens do not count because they no longer laying eggs but are great mothers of step chicks.
10. Any chicken that is for sale or trade does not count because they are leaving.
11. Never have an odd number of chickens because no one wants to be the odd chicken out.
12. Bantams only count as 1/2 because they are small.
13. ANY ANIMAL that has a name is not counted because once you give them a name they are family, and you can not count family.

So the way I see it most of you need buy some chickens because most of what you have DO NOT COUNT.
Love this!!!

And That Is The Perfect Explanation To The Subtraction Portion of CHICKEN MATH!!!! You Very Easily Can Subtract Right Down To ZERO!

Yep! We are becoming expert math folks around here! Can't count most of our birds either!
We're on lunch break now from building the new grow-out pen which will later become the layer coop. Dblea was just here & picked up her chicks for her cousin & a bunch of Rose of Sharon bushes & seeds for her mom. She brought me 2 BLRW roos & a bunch of strawberry plants. She's such a sweet girl. They tried to use GPS to find my place & it brought them down the paved tractor path. NEVER trust GPS!

Busy day for you! Glad to hear she got her birds traded out with you. I love the GPS, but don't really trust it for anything beyond the basic main road areas. It has tried to direct us on numerous gas well roads and even a couple of farmer field access roads! So use it 'with a grain of salt' so to speak!
Nice meeting Chad and wing today. And Chad, I found the quail under the couch.
Now that sounds like something we'd hear around here!

My mom took her chicks home. Only 10 left out if the 23 I had, and 1 is for a friend. :( I miss them already, but I know they have a good home and ther WERE her birds to begin with. At least I know some good people to hook me up with more birds!! Made plans for the chicken tractor and the screen door for the big coop today. Hope to finish both tomorrow!

How old are they? How is their egg color? I'd only be able to take pullets at the moment

I'd love them for eggs, and I'm sure they'd make pretty OEs

I have a few Black Copper Marans chicks and started chicks that I'm will to part with...... PM me if interested.

Some are either very lightly featherd shanks or clean-legged,,,,, some can sexed fairly accurately.

Some were just hatched,,, some are almost 2 weeks old, some are 5 weeks, others are around 7 or 8 weeks old, and more on the way this week.

also have a few laying pullets available, egg color is pretty good on the ones laying at the moment, although I do not know which eggs come from which pullets.
