Picking the right breed

I currently have a main flock of chickens of various larger bodied hens and two bantams for egg productions and pets. I have built a completely separate run and coop to try a small breeding flock. I was initially interested in Hedemoras solely based on a google search that showed a Wooly hen. Ive had an extremely hard time trying to get hatching eggs and chicks, hatched out 36 eggs and have 1 chick left, and ordered chicks that all arrived dead.
I want a breed that is kinda rare, friendly and pretty. I was looking toward landrace breeds so I wouldnt have to be very strict or selective with breeding, since I will get attached and not want to cull.
What are some other options out there?

Brahmas, polish, silkies, australorps (the blue variety is more rare than the black), sebrights.

Oh, and araucanas, though pure breed ones are very hard to find.

Spitzhauben arw neat birds. Kinda common, but quality birds are rarer
