Pig Bomb

I just came in the house from setting out quail for my husband to train his dogs on. We were about 1/4 mi. S. of the house on the ranch road and there were about 4 big hog wallers. We are between Lake Eufaula and the South Fork of the Canadian River, they use our place to move back and forth. Lake Eufaula State Park is about 4 miles from here, as the crow flies, and they shot 78 from a helicopter in a week's time over there.

I haven't had any trouble yet with my chickens, they are behind electric fence in the daytime, and shut up tight in a chicken house at night. We also have 2 big yard lights and a pen full of bird dogs nearby.

I never even thought about the hogs taking after my chickens ....eeeeekkkkkkkk.

It's always something: quoting Rosana Rosesanadana.

I have a friend with some property down around the Ada/Allen area. They trap hogs whenever they get a taste for pork. He says the wild stuff tastes better than domestic, and trapping them is a lot cheaper than raising them and buying them.

I just wish they would get rid of the ones around me! I live in a rural area, but it's really too heavily populated to support much of a wild pig population. The big predators have been moving into the area over the last several years. We also have cougar and wolves to deal with... and we are STILL overrun with deer!

Thank you kman , I found another map from 2004 that did not work as well ; could not size it up to identify specific counties . From what I read the small number of ferals in Fulton Co. , IL have never managed to expand . Those two counties in southern IL are either where or very near the location of a European Boar farm that were selling hogs that were advertised as pure or some nearly pure Wild Boar that I located last year ; and they looked to be the real McCoy . The website had not been updated for several years and now I can't find it so I don't know if they're still in business or not . You add the fact that maintance of fences is difficult on rough timber ground , to the fact that you're trying to hold wild animals in , with the fact that domestics have already succeded in going feral in that area , I would think there is a pretty good chance they have interbred .

Maybe off topic but....
Does anyone know how to make wild boar stew? I had some in a fancy restaurant in Seattle and it was just TO DIE FOR! OMG, if that is what wild boar tastes like, I'm going to have to track some down...Not showing any in WA yet...

JP - Thank you. Prickly pear do abound around here. My mother taught me that you can eat a tiny new leaf, the size of your smallest fingernail right off the plants. I was startled, but it works, no stickers.

As predicted, my dad had stories about the javelinas. Even gated communities on the borders of southern towns they have known to congregate on porches and one man, who got between a mother and her little one got bit and took months to get it all healed up from various infections. For the most part though it sounds like they leave people alone but reak havoc on the gardens. (Well, he had a few other stories, but for the most part....)

This has been a very interesting thread. I guess I am glad once again to have heat over snow and dry over wet....at least for now.

Thanks all for the interesting discussion.

My uncle raised pigs when i was a kid as well as sled dogs
he got a litter of Eurasian boar/domestic crosses one time from a game farm
well when the pigs were about 100 lbs a litter of puppies went and played in the pig pen
needless to say there were no puppies any more

I live in caddo co ok. the pigs are every wer. This time of year we shoot thim an skinem out for are coondogs an gamechickens to eat the moskcovey ducks like thim to. I put out a 250 pd sow last week my brother got down on sugercreek an the chickens had eatn all the meat of it on one side so i flipd it over to day so they could get the rest of it. Any farmer will let you hunt thim just ask. You dont have to have a hunting lic. They are not a game animal.
