Pigeon Talk

Indoor birds should live 15+ years. Outdoor birds in the elements I imagine are exposed to more pathogens and the weather so it's going to be more variable.
Feral pigeons average 9 months.
Feral 9 months? Wow, that seems extremely low. Not that I don’t believe you, I would just have guessed at least a few years. Thanks!

New squabs. One hen hatched two, one hen had lost one egg early on. The single looks to be a few days old already, I hadn’t bothered her because it has been really frigid here lately. One more hen on a nest with a single egg.

What brand/price is everyone paying for pigeon feed? I have been buying browns for the most part and it was always expensive but it is what is closest to me and a much higher quality than the others I tried. I just went to pick up a few bags yesterday though and they went up to $37.99 which seems outrageous to me! I have tried mixing my own but was still coming out to almost $30 for 50lb after driving different locations for the different seeds so that wasn’t much better. The guy I got my birds from originally said he pays like $23-25for 50 lb which is totally reasonable.

For the past 3 months I've been having trouble even just finding feed. I had to resort to feeding chicken feed because it was all I could get. This country (whole world) is a hysterical mess. Pretty soon 37.99 is going to be cheap. Dog food has gone up about 35-40% in my area.

This is what I use. $12.99 for 35#. Used to be 9.99, could sometimes find it for 8.99.
Probably not the best nutrition mix, but my birds seem to do fine on it. About once a week, I’ll mix half of the daily serving with layer crumbles.
I was running low the other day and couldn’t get to tractor supply, so I bought a bag of “premium wild bird seed” from dollar general, a 6# bag was around $7!
