Pigeon Talk

They're such cute birds. Do they have feather feet or are they clean leg? They look a lot like Satinettes.
They are mostly Satinettes. I have 2 Bluettes too! They all fall into the Classic Frill category.
Mine are all feather legged. That’s one of the reasons I chose them. I love the look.

So pretty! They look very regal :)
If I didn't have so many Rollers, I'd get some of your Frills, more German Owls, and Indian Fantails.

Right?! It’s so hard to keep from wanting more and more kinds! I kinda decided when I got into chickens several years ago, I like keeping breeds separated and pure (except for a few random yard birds). Same with ducks, I wanted them all but settled on Calls. So I decided to keep to one type of pigeon also. Luckily they come in multiple colors, so that helps! They don’t all look identical.

I like keeping breeds pure too, and it's a good thing because if I didn't, I'd probably have two times the birds I have now. :D
At least with pigeons once they're paired you have a good chance of getting pure squabs.
Maybe I could put more pigeons with my pheasant...

I have two pairs on eggs right now, my 13 year old hen surprised me and laid a fertile egg!

I haven’t decided on what kind yet. My 10 yo daughter is pigeon crazy and has been filling me in on all her reading but I need to get up to speed myself.

Would love to know if anyone has recommendations for first pigeons.
Are you going to be keeping them in a loft (with free flight), in an aviary (no free flight), or inside your home? If you want them to be house pets, you could try getting some imprinted birds. They’re almost guaranteed to be friendly, since they like people as much as they like other birds. Some breeders imprint their birds, and there’s also lots of imprinted rescue pigeons in need of homes (happens a lot with ferals— people find an orphaned feral and intend to release it, but they accidentally imprint it and it’s too tame to be released).

I came across a lost fancy pigeon, all white with feathered legs and a crest, in the park a couple days ago but I got within about 2 feet and it flew away out and over a lake and out of range. Some sort of satinette cross.
It’s probably still there, if it hasn’t been caught by predators by now. The poor thing has no chance without homing instincts.
