Pigeon Talk

They are WONDERFUL little characters!!! And they grow on people!

I live with my 70 yr old great aunt and maintain the house/yard and everything for her. She isn't utterly dependent and still drives but she cannot really keep up caring for a home on her own anymore, or remembering to take her medications etc so that is where I come in. But I digress... she has come to absolutely adore my pigeon. You see... I adopted her when my aunt was visiting her sister across the country so she didn't know about Olive for the first two weeks. So she was definitely surprised,to say the least, when she came home and Olive was sitting on the arm rest of her chair! (granted, I have a lot of other smaller birds, so it was not a total surprise - and I knew she likes my other birds so this was not a total random thing.) She had the impression pigeons were dirty, messy, undesirable birds though. But Olive changed her view completely in a matter of about a day.

So the other night I overheard her talking with a friend on the phone about Olive, about how adorable and sweet she is... just raving! I assume the friend was replying with some concern about mess, because I heard my aunt reply "None at all, he's got her paper trained!" :lau

And she's really pretty good about that. On the front porch, there was an old door leaned up against a wall, and Olive had taken to sitting on the door out there for periods during the day. This morning I decided to take the old door out and put it in the basement, and was preparing to find and clean up a few weeks worth of mess behind it because, after all, I had trained her to go potty on top of the other door and figured she wasn't going to distinguish one from another. All I found were feathers though. She hadn't pooped there once! She knows to only go on the other door, which I leave swung open above the newspapers.

Sadly Olive will not let my aunt pet her. She can call her and she will come and she will sit on her hand or on her lap, but I am the only one she solicits pets from. Unlike a cat or a dog, they reserve that sort of contact to their "mate", which for Olive, has become me.
You are very lucky to have olive. I think she is one in a million!
Houston we have a problem.

The boys used their hard earned money to buy more pigeons.
That's what we like! :oops::lol:

We're hoping to have more insulating finished by next winter, every bit helps just cant get it all done at once.. but eventually I hope it'll hold the heat in and cold out! :fl:fl
I remember the many trips to Home Depot for more and more insulation! Would geo-thermal be an option to heat and cool your place? I have seen some incredible videos on the subject.

:love Does she have one blue eye?

I feel like I should know, but what is 'the dome'?

Is that your less dominant cock? I don't know what that means but its what I hear most frequently in my loft which is within 5' of my window. I don't hear it indoors but as soon as I open the door - 90° chance 1'm going to hear that, even in the middle of the night when I would expect them to be sleeping. My screen door is noisy so I dk if I wake them or if they were already chatting away. I do find it reassuring to hear by the cooing I have live birds even before I go in. (I live in dread of a weasel attack as experienced by Ron.)

Nope :D Just the lighting I think. This video is showing my husband the old man in this video sight is getting bad but Mia’s in it.

I enjoy every post on Olive's life as a house pigeon. Please keep them coming!

She has a pretty good life I think - is a master of the leisure arts. She doesn't fly very much, just from one place to perch to another, but walks all around the floors. Takes a bath every other day in the sun porch. Sleeps in a plush fleece bed. Gets plenty of attention!

When the weather warms, I'll start to take her outside on the little leash to get some sun and fresh air. Just the backyard at first. She does not really like to sit on my shoulder long enough to go for a "walk" yet like my cockatiel did.

Oh! She loves my computer. The moment I take my eyes of her and leave the room she starts dancing on my keyboard. She has sent a few nonsense messages in my chats to my friends - not only does she type, she often ends up hitting enter and actually sending the messages!

Her cage is open via the door on the side, she was out for most of the morning but has currently gone home for a nap in her bed. What a rough life!!
