Pigeon Talk

Probably a good IDEA to borrow a hen like you were considering before. This way you could start having small ones soon.
Not sure if it is possible for you, but your description of loft seemed small to me. Would you consider expanding it to make it larger. That way the pigeons would not be inclined to try and escape any chance possible.:idunno
It was really just that white hen and my dark cock bird who did that, the other two never even tried it. That being said I plan to modify the doors on the loft to have a sort of small feeding hatch I can slip the feeder into. I also think it started because the first few times they did it it was because they flew down from the perches during feeding and overshot their mark, going straight out the door. I was told never to intentionally let the birds out of the main door in the loft so that they didn't try to escape. I think after the first few times they did it they figured out how to slip past me every time. Amittedly I should have done something sooner to correct it, but at least now I only have to worry about the one cock doing it.
I am currently still in college and living at home, so I don't really have any plans to make a large, permanent loft yet, which is why I opted for a small loft for a small number of birds. I am considering making some improvements and enlarging it but it won't be anything dramatic.

Just read an interesting article. In London, a researcher is using homers to gather micro climate data. He straps a back pack on them. It's under 3 percent of their weight. Homer owners throughout London are participating. The data gathered can be used multiple ways....helping the city identifying areas that are over polluted and aiding in their planning decisions are just a few. They found the pigeons gather more useful data than the drones they were using, due to their flight patterns. So there....gainfully employed pigeons.

@backyard pigeons - It was a sales showroom and service garage for early Ford and then Dodge vehicles. It had its own gas pumps out front as shown in the photo but dk if fuel was sold to the public, maybe!:) The date on the building is 1918.

Huh! That's pretty cool! Is doba still doing good?

Yes! She made it up to the highest perch in the aviary yesterday and today. She hung out up there quite awhile, enjoying her achievement I think. Each bit of improvement gives her more confidence. I do believe she felt deprived seeing other birds up high when she wasn't able to. But she did not give up and the several cockbirds now giving her attention is further incentive to increase her ability to evade them. I have the slimmest hope she might be able to fly with the flock again.

I have some sad news. Bonnie’s other egg stopped developing. :(
It hadn’t hatched yet, so this evening I candled it and I’m sure it has quit. Looked very close to full-term too! I left the egg, but I guess I should remove it tomorrow?

The single that hatched is super tiny, I hope it survives. Another loner, but that’s ok I guess.
