We already had Samantha even before the loft was built.

New born Samantha and one of the artists.

My brother's only concern about the pigeons was that they would poop on Samantha, happily this has not occurred.

I haven't really seen the mother or Blackjack (father) feeding these two since the first day, but they seem to be growing fast.

Edit: I should probably clarify, I think those two are good parents, they're just shy about it in front of me! Any time I open the loft and the hen is on the nest the cock will get in the box anyway to defend them- he is a good dad.

The results speak for them. I don't see feeding unless I look for it at the right time.

What do you mean, dog training? Training the dog to do what? Retrieve to hand...?

No, to find birds and point them. Pigeons work well to teach dogs to hold their point until the bird is flushed. Some dogs naturally do it better than others. Some dogs need to learn to not creep up on the bird, so you use a checkcord (long cord attached to the collar that you can step on to keep them from rushing or creeping forward). You either put the pigeon in a trap or launcher or plant them with their head tucked under their wing, let the dogs find and point them, then release or flush the birds so they fly up. At least that's what I want them for. I guess you could use a harness and use them for retrieving, but I think most people use dummies for that.

Quail are popular for dog training too.

The problem with quail (at least Coturnix, especially jumbo) is that they often aren't strong fliers. You DON'T want your dog developing the habit of catching birds when they flush. I do have a few quail, though, too. Mostly just to introduce my English Setter to game birds.
