Well, hawk season is here in middle TN. I don't think it had hit hard until recently. I can't say for sure, because I didn't see it, but I lost two birds in yesterday's loft fly. Both the ferals, which are a bit slower than the racers. So I'm guessing hawks targeted them. Oh well, I guess it's part of it. I will keep flying my racers untill I lose one, if I lose one, I'm locking them in for several months.

Thanks all. The survivor is doing well today and made it through another brutally cold night. It's 7 days old today and despite this not being an issue yesterday or the day before it is beginning to show slight signs of splayed leg. How do I correct this?

It's the left leg. It doesn't seem severe but its definitely not like the other leg.

BP, sorry to hear that. How's your white pigeon ?

I count myself very lucky in that I don't seem to have a hawk problem here. We dont really have migration either. I have seen buzzards out over the fields but not in town. I did once see a kestrel land on a post at the end of my garden but they are too small to be a problem. I've probably just jinxed myself saying that and it will most probably only be a matter of time before something happens.

It looks like it's doing well. Is it pushing its leg out to the side when it moves about?

Happy holidays to everyone! Not sure how much I’ll be around over the next week or two.

I have no idea if splay leg in a pigeon could be treated like a chicken chick, but I would suspect so. I use vet wrap, cut a piece about an inch wide, by about 6 inches long. Wrap around both legs and press together between the legs. Add another little piece of wrap or tape around the middle section if necessary.

And I have decided on names, if Duff’s squabs hatch. I’m up to J, so I think Jingle and Jolly!

You can use a hair band too. Nice names for the squabbies though :) when are they due to hatch?

Does it have to be vet wrap or does any adhesive bandage work?
Use whatever you have. It is necessary to do ASAP. You want the growth of leg, and joint forming correctly. You can also use a rubber band to keep the legs together. Make sure that you do use a wide band, and adjust accordingly. A narrow rubber band may have a tendency to slightly cut into leg.:idunno
I tried treating splay legs on 2 of my squabs, and was not successful. Maybe I started treatment too late.
