I haven't raked mine out much, but its been winter. The pen they are in used to be occupied by OEGB chickens. They were able to keep the ground scratched and "tilled" pretty much on their own, unless it got damp and then hardened. I have one pen that stays kinda hard and solid, but this one seems to stay more loose ground. Will have to see what the spring/summer brings.

Saw this pic online, makes me consider some straw, since it looks similar to mine, but it might be too humid here. My chickens are pretty good at scratching up the straw in a hurry, but I don't know how the pigeons would be with it.

The straw could work. I do like the pine needles best as they allow moisture to drain thru without absorbing much and without clumping. I'm talking about the longer more flexible pine needles not the short pointy ones. I like them best as nesting material too.

Also they are free if you can gather them nearby....

Most of my chicken coops are full of pine needles. The chickens LOVE them and I never have to remove anything because they biodegrade.

Thinking of a similar floor in my pigeon loft. Right now it’s just dirt.

Sadly, it's going to be plastic. I'm waiting for the second egg to make the switch. He is so very proud of his egg.

Cage upgrade, twice as tall, with new wooden shelves, and a fleece pet bed instead of a nest bowl - she loves to lay in it during the evening.
