Pigeon Talk

I inquired and got more pictures of them... What would these colors be called? I think they're gorgeous. Seller says they're well socialized.

Well I just got the call I've been waiting for....the stray I released on Saturday finally made it home some time today :yaalbeit a little late! He was grateful for me looking after her and letting her rest. He reckons there may be a chance she may stop over again as she knows where to get a quick bite to eat! I'm gonna start charging rent for these pidgies treating me like a B&B :lau
I have also found a breeder for the archangels. Unfortunately he is in Bristol which is the other side of the country. I know England is small but I still don't fancy a 200 mile drive each way to pick them up! He wants £80 for a cock and a hen, these are show quality with all the vaccinations and paperwork. And it's only £40 to get them shipped to me! I couldn't drive it for that! He is going to hold them for me which is great.
We are going to the auction with the bunnies tomorrow so I'll get an idea of the exact space I've got to work with. I'm still trying to decide the best layout for it.

So glad the stray made it home. :clap
CCUK’s B&B. I like the sound of that. :gig

I'm going to think on it. She just seems so lost right now, and sad, and Olive is indifferent at best and jealous at worst. She does not like if I hold Rosie and will pace all around. From her perspective I am her mate, and I'm cheating on her!

 Feral alert! Asylum seeker trying to get in....

It's a young bird looking for its flock. Over the years I probably had a dozen or so show up at my lofts. One concern is the possibility of introducing disease to your flock.

Pigeons in the house ? A bird or two - probably not a bad idea/pet, but pigeon dander is a strong allergen to many people resulting in a chronic condition called 'pigeon lung'. It's worth doing a google search on this condition. Many a pigeon flyer has had to get rid of their birds because of this very real condition.

Oh, you don't know the half of what I've kept in the house before... in my "past life" I had about forty house birds of a dozen species that were mostly maintained free-flight in one specialized room of the house that I basically made into the "indoor aviary". And for a few years, I had a garden enclosure where they summered. Two or three pigeons is *nothing* compared to what I used to keep up with!

Keeping that room spotless, now that was a bit... messy lol. But also a lot of fun! I sold most of the flock when I moved and was unable to have many pets for a few years. I used to raise cockatiels, finches, canaries, and budgies. I fostered a pair of ringneck doves for a few months and kept one of their chicks for a few years.

Birds are messy pets but if you keep up with it (and I am a bit obsessive about cleaning anyway) they are not bad as far as I am concerned. I use air purifiers to catch dander, dust everything weekly, scrub cages every couple days and vacuum the house top to bottom every morning.

I just view it as... life is short. Birds make me happy! They're worth a bit of cleaning. I wouldn't recommend this many to anyone who doesn't want to make a hobby out of it because it is a big commitment but I really enjoy it.

I was contemplating I could very easily set up an enclosure out of a dog cage like this (this one is not my picture) for Rosie and if I got her a companion in a quieter part of the house. It would not be really much more mess than I manage as is with the two pigeons and the three cages housing smaller birds.

Beautiful pics! 40 birds? Do NOT take this personally, but gross!:p (I know you did an good job cleaning) I want a house bird or two, but 40 is pushing it for me... And my family...

It is up to you on the bird. I think Rosie will fit in eventually, but it may take time.

I think it comes down to management (and probably individual sensitivities like other allergens). I take hygiene very seriously. It isn't like a loft with twenty pigeons pooping everywhere where there are feathers, accumulating droppings, loose bedding all over getting airborne and getting inhaled. I wipe down cages, change papers and run the vacuum daily and keep my HEPA filters changed and cleaned out.

I've googled indoor pigeons a lot and there are some people who keep birds in the house in conditions I find just disgusting, like everything is dusty, cages are left dirty for weeks and feathers everywhere and not just letting the birds poop everywhere in the house but letting it build up, dry out and get airborne. I think that's absolutely GROSS and that is not how I keep my birds. That is not healthy for the owner OR the animals. That's how you get lung problems.
