Pigeon Talk

I can’t keep pigeons in the house, my cat would not give them a moment of peace and closing her out of rooms isn’t an option either. She will nonstop scream at the closed door even if you are in another room..

I haven’t seen hawks flying in my direct area and the birds have good cover from them as well with the trees right next to the coop. They will be locked in a small flight cage any time I see flying predators around the area.. I can’t plan on getting more pigeons at the time. It could happen in the future (read spring) if I happen upon some needing a home.

I never intended to fully keep them as close pets but that’s what it’s turning into so maybe I’ll happen upon some more birds needing a home
It will happen!

Hawks are not the only risk. 2 of my birds were hit by cars. Consider using a dog kennel and adding a top with rolls of wire fencing. I got a powder coated steel one on sale, 4ft by 8ft ended up 4x10 when attached to the loft. It looks nice and works great to give my birds some room to move wings in safety.

You can also use chain link kennels, check CL.

Ok... Just one thing I have to say. The trees near the coop make it more dangerous because hawks ambush from a tree perch.

We never had hawks around until I had a garden aviary. They found it in a few weeks and then would hit the wire going after birds every few days.

@ChickenTenderKesha , I understand your problem. I am going to say this, and I don't mean it any any offensive way at all. But, how attached are you to them? If you aren't attached to them, I would fly them. There is a high risk, but I say it is worth it. Even if you haven't seen them, doesn't mean hawks aren't there... They are! Whether you see them or not. are these the birds you plan on keeping with your chickens? If so, it so it sounds like you have no option but to free fly them. They may grow hawk savvy, or they may not.

I always forget about cars... we do have a lot of traffic by our house as we have 2 major plants right down the street. All the people who work at said plants come down our road.. the rush hours are usually right as the sun is rising/before it even thinks about shining and then again at 4-5pm

I toyed with the idea of chain link kennel fencing (10’x10’x6’) to increase the run size for my little coop...there’s a way that could be connected to the pigeon pop door I’m sure...

... This shows the top I made from wire fencing to replace the awning type cover it came with. Birds prefer the view even in the rain. They have shelter inside the loft.View attachment 1941945
What wire did you use? I can’t really tell, there’s too many lines for my eyes to focus..

That’s good to be reminded of thank you!! I completely forgot that vital fact about them, my brain is in chicken mode thinking the pigeons can/will just hide under the trees
I’m still shocked I’ve made it this far without seeing one flying around, even with my smaller chickens now. I’ve seen them a good drivig distance away but never around my village! I’m always looking up when the boys scream out when birds fly over, always just them pesky sea chickens..

This is going to sound cold but I’m not attached to them at all when I think about it. I did put time and effort into nursing the one back to health but they are birds and birds do love to fly when given the chance to..

I do still want to toy with the idea of being able to attach an enclosed run they can be in and be safe in...

Where are my manners?! Welcome to pigeon talk @ChickenTenderKesha !
Just forgotten as there was pigeons to be talked about :gig thank you for the welcome!!
