Pigeon Talk

Well, I finally broke down and got some pigeons! Yeah! :clap

I've been breeding chickens and ducks for a few years now (also previously had turkey and quail) and I have 3 budgies indoors, but I decided I wanted some pigeons. So I found a fella close to me that had some fantails, which were the first pigeon to ever catch my eye and make me say "I want some of those!". Turned out that he also had a pair of Satinettes, and once I looked those up, I was hooked! So I met up with him last weekend. I got the pair of Satinettes, and he also had some parlor rollers. After looking at the fantails, I decided I liked the parlor rollers better, so I came home with the pair of Satinettes and a pair of parlor rollers.

Being not so new to the chicken world, but brand new to the pigeon world, I'd like to invite you to share your experiences with me. Major differences in raising pigeons as opposed to chickens, etc, etc. Especially pigeon specific stuff that non-pigeon people probably never thought of, etc. I've been reading many of the pigeon related threads here, but hate to hijack them with a bunch of my questions, so here we go..... tell me, tell me. :pop

I'm also twisting the arm (*wink, wink*) of @Fields Mountain Farm and @shawluvsbirds to get some pigeons too, so we decided we could hopefully learn this stuff together.
those look nice, does anybody here has racing pigeons? here in the Philippines, that's what we usually race, and we are a lot here.

I have racing homers, but don't race anymore. Still have my old stb clock though haha IMG_20200417_105541374.jpg

So cute! Any signs of eggs yet?

I love your new avy! Is that a vireo? I dont recognize the bird.
She laid them a couple days ago but I took them out and switched to fakes. It's so peaceful in there with just the 2 of them and the cockbird is very aggressive anyhow I'm not sure I want any more.
It's a gray catbird, I like them a lot because of their boldness and vocal ability. I don't get many mockingbirds in my area but they're pretty similar. The ones that come here during the summer are really tame and I had one last year that would catcall and mimic the whistle I did to call the pigeons

What is the likelihood of hen pigeons laying eggs consistently without a cock bird present?

Just thinking about a few things regarding Thing 1 & Thing 2 is why I’m asking.. I haven’t been able to get any real fake eggs for them so they’ve lain eggs again, but it’s been so long since the last time and I’m just wondering if that’s normal? They both made their own nests in the bedding and each laid a clutch of 2 eggs again.

Edit to add that the last eggs were back in mid January, the first eggs for these clutches was around the 8th of this month (April) that’s a 3 month gap between eggs. Normal for first year hens with the absence of a cock bird?
They both got right off the nest and stopped sitting one the eggs once I took them away. It looks like they made one giant nest now instead of two little ones but they don’t sleep there at night so I’m unsure how much was them and how much was the wind blowing the shavings around up there.

I just got pigeons!:yesss:

They are a pair of Rollers. I got them, a coop, a bit of food and grit, and a TON of knowledge from some friends of mine, all for free!

They aren't a mated pair but will be hopefully soon. Their names are Commando (Mando) and Cher Ami (Ami). Both were named after famous war pigeons who had really cool stories! Mando is white with black speckles, and I was told he will get more speckles as he grows older (apparently the breeder worked for years to perfect this color!). Ami is a pretty buff-tan. I was told that the breeder also worked for years in making his pigeon's feathers extra soft!grit

They are still adjusting to their new home. I love them all ready! I'm so excited to learn more about pigeons and other pigeon keepers on BYC!:celebrate
