Pigeon Talk

Day 13! I did not expect him to be this white. I figured he would be mostly gray but dad must have strong genes. I was a bit worried last night because we had a really cold night in the 20s or so. Luckily mom kept him warm!

It was a cold hard freeze here last night too! That baby is adorable. :love I'm not surprised at the white look. White appearance in pigeons comes from genes that affect the expression of color. White birds still have a blue, ash red or brown color genes.

Ah, I see! I was thinking of the white genes to be a color gene, equal to browns, grays, etc. So I figured mom's gray genes would be more dominant over the white. It makes much more sense to think of it of how the color is expressed (through lack of pigement.) Thanks! Dad is pretty big (not as big as a king or something like a giant runt, but bigger than most pigeons) and mom is my smallest pigeon, so I wonder how big he will get!

Pretty sure I haven't posted on here in a while but I moved to Texas successfully and have been building a new loft/aviary out of scrap wood for the birds! Just needs some reinforcement, a door, and wire! Unfortunately the panic buying of Chickens from Corona has led to all the stores being sold out of wire fencing 🙄

I forgot the most important part of my previous post! New eggs today!
Congrats! I hope you are going to let them hatch this time. You know that hen will throw some cool looking babies.

Glad to hear you made the move safely! Your new coop and aviary looks very nice. The pigeons will be happy with the flight pen. I hope you and your family are settling in happily as well. ( somehow 'panic buying of chickens' has a strange ring to it. I had not heard of it. lol)

Cooper's hawk is getting very bold, he waited until I peeked my head into the inside hutch portion to change the waterer, and when my back was turned he slammed the wire and didn't stop until I opened the aviary door and went back out to chase him.

This one is young, the one that bothered me all winter and early spring was an adult. He'll have to learn to fear the bottle rockets like the last.
Another reason to let them raise a clutch - It will keep them busy while you keep them in and safe til hopefully the Coopers goes elsewhere?

@biophiliac haha thanks! And yeah I live in WA and all but Walmart had no more than one type of fencing, and all told me the suppliers were struggling to keep up. And as soon as this whole pandemic broke out I start getting emails from all my regular hatcheries saying they'd be extremely booked on orders till late April! To May(this was beginning of February. I think they're probably ok now but certain breeds are just booked indefinitely whith demand, and the last 3 times I went to the feed store they only had a single chick breed and a single duck breed in stock! Luckily I'm doing chickens till late this year at earliest, but still!
