My neighbors have a very large Rottie that is out of control. So far, it hasn't even come close to my chickens, but it has gone after my daughter when she has pulled into MY driveway-twice-and it has gone after me 3 times. One day it wouldn't let me out of my own gate. It has started fights through MY backyard fence with my dogs at least 6 times that I can remember. I called and reported the dog, and the neighbor was issued a dog at large citation, and was told that when the dog is outside it is either to be tied up, or on a leash. Neighbor lady came into my work a week later and said I shouldn't have a problem with her dog anymore, that she has it on a shock collar and every time she see's it heading for my house she gives it a jolt-but if she happens to let the dog out and she goes upstairs or something and the dog comes over and causes a problem, I need to let her know "instead of going the other route and reporting her to the cops". 2 days after that conversation I was getting ready to head out of town for my friends cancer surgery. I had to run out to my car for a pair a gloves, and the darn dog came after me again. I didn't have time to report it due to the fact that we had to leave in 5 minutes and I couldn't wait for the Villiage officer to come and take a report. I am at my wits end with these people! Not only are they irresponsible dog owners (they have 4 dogs total, only the Rottie being mean), but I have never seen a more disrespectful bunch of people in my entire life!
I have raised and owned Rotties and German Shepherds. My sister has raised Pits. My son has a Pit that I fostered for about 9 months when he moved and couldn't take her with him. I have fostered Dobies. I myself have 4 dogs, which is why my back yard is fenced. If you are going to have ANY dog, you need to be a responsible owner. IMHO, this particular dog should have been put down after biting a child-even though it's the owner's the fault for not controlling his animal, the dog can never be trusted again.
