Please help me with my sick girl

The compacted food definitely might have done it... I am not qualified enough to be sure though. I have processed a decent number of chickens but they had all been fasting so they had no food and so I am not sure what a normal situation would look like in that area but certainly if she had a compacted crop that can be toxic. Thank you so much for posting the results of your necropsy and although my bird was already many hours gone and was put in the freezer I might thaw her and see if she suffered a similar issue. The age and breed could just be coincidence and since we both have Cream Legbars they presented illness in a similar way.
I’m really looking forward to some answers, even if it’s all normal. I did not feel anything when I felt her crop, so I assumed it was empty. I did not see what I could identify as eggs causing an issue, but this was a first for both my husband and I. The yellow stuff was weird, my husband thinks it was an infection, but I just don’t know. 🫤 Thank you for sharing.

I'm sorry for your loss. :hugs

I'm sure that @azygous and @Eggcessive will chime in. I'll also tag in @coach723 for her thoughts too.

First of all, thank you for the photos, I'm sure it was hard to do. Your husband is skilled!
I'm not a vet that's for sure and any necropsy I've done is amateur at best.
The discoloration of the liver is interesting. Whether it's at a stage of Fatty Liver disease or is affected by Aflatoxins, I don't know, but the lower lobe especially looks to have started to possibly lose some function.

I also see egg yolk in the coelomic cavity which would, to me indicate internal laying.

The heart has some fat, there's also a bit of a fat pad which is not that uncommon in laying hens. Some hens are more fatty than others, but it may have been enough to deem Fatty Liver Disease, but hard to know.

Oviduct to me looks nice, I see intact ovum and no signs of cancer of the ovaries from what I can see.

If I had to guess, Fatty Liver Disease with Internal Laying. But it will be interesting to see what others say.

As for the yellow "stuff", I can't i.d. that, it's curious though.

Sometimes I've been left with more questions than answers when I do this...

Hope that helps.

I'm sure you will get some answers in the morning. These folks are very knowledgeable. Thank you and your DH for sharing this. I'm sure it must've been hard for you
Oh, I have seen all of this community share some crazy knowledge, it’s really been the best. Thank you for your input. It’s not good to be alone in these unknowns. It was difficult, but I really wanted to see what caused this. I want to be able to help people here at some point, so you have to go through it, I guess 😕

Omg, thank you SOOO much! That helps so much, I love hearing all of it. I’m going to go back and look at these so I know what you are seeing. I KNEW this egg yolks in that cavity was suspicious, as did identify what looked like a little egg that was forming. That poor girl. Is that a breed thing, or a common pullet issue? I know everyone’s in or going to bed, I’m such a night owl. I will wait for the morning and see what comes of this. Thank you so much again :hugs

The egg (follicle) was found in the abdominal cavity or could it have gotten knocked loose during the examination.

Female chickens are hatched with all the follicles or ovum that they will lay in their lifetime. A hen is amazingly made!

You may find the video of interest as well.

That was very interesting. So much to know, it’s nice to have those resources to reference. I am really going to study those pictures. We actually both thought the liver was the lungs, so I misspoke earlier.

Also, would the yeasty smell from the crop and gizzard indicate sour crop, or is that normal? I’m also very curious about the odd mustard yellow colored fluid that was showing when cutting into the crop and on the vent. Thank you 🙏
